"Gimli as comedy relief?"

I loved that and given the dark and heavy nature of the story line itself I thought that the humor along with the love scene was a great way to take a break from the intensity which could get overwhelming otherwise.

I loved the comic bits too... "Shall I find you a box?" HA!

I was surprised by it the first time, wondering if it was a good idea to poke fun... Then the second time, I realized PJ had made very similar jokes to the ones we would have made in the hobbit hole, about something we love. It is an affectionate "poking fun".

Three words to you regarding how Gimli's humor which was being used to take away intensity came off as: Jar Jar Binks.

Regardless, that was just one of many dumbed down scenes in the flick. Not saying it wasn't a good film overall but its not exactly as flawless as FOTR.
