Anybody else remember when the T.V. or HiFi console was the best piece of furniture in the house?

Fascinating bio of Milstein.

And remember the "tv lamp?" Every viewing room had to have one in the '50s because many thought that tv might be harmful to the eyes if viewed in total darkness. Ours resembled a swan.

yeah, I remember--and when I got my first pair of specs, I was sure that was part of the reason. My grandmother had a 5- ton Zenith console with a "halo" aound the B&W screen, and it was such a techno-wonder, we'd rush in on ou yearly visit to turn on the T.V.
