...Actually our local So. California Wal-Marts had DVD's of .."WE WERE SOLDIERS".. set up with cardboard MEL GIBSON displays when it first came out, as did Circuit City and Best Buy TV Stores.
...Our local Target Stores were advertising its coming release to its stores featuring its release date on closed circuit TV Screens hoverng above their Video Departments.
...When the DVD/Video was released I only saw -1- National TV Commercial on TV and that was during NBC's ..'Tonight Show with JAY LENO'.., the Friday night of its DVD Release Week. Blockbuster Video had local TV Promotions for it as well. But there were no massive TV Promotions from Paramount Pictures like we've seen for other movie DVD releases.
...Thanks primarily to audience word of mouth recommendations, .."WE WERE SOLDIERS".. remained in theaters in the USA for 3 solid months after it's initial theater release.
...This Movie touches Hearts ..quietly.

"...our local So. California Wal-Marts had DVD's of .."WE WERE SOLDIERS".. set up with cardboard MEL GIBSON displays when it first came out, as did Circuit City and Best Buy TV Stores." Every WalMart I go to, I ask if they have copies of "We Were Soldiers" and the few who have heard of the movie tell me that it hasn't yet been released. Admittedly, when it is not the Christmas season, I tend to avoid shopping, but my only point is that the upcoming debate will only serve to spread the news of this movie to another group of folks who may not know it exists.
FReegards...MUD
BTW...watch Rush weigh into the debate and you'll see the sales of the DVD and VHS shoot thru the roof!!

From We Were Soldiers
"We are moving into the Valley of the Shadow of Death where you will watch the back of the man next to you, as he will watch yours, and you won't care what color he is, or by what name he calls God. We are going into battle against a tough and determined enemy. I can't promise you that I will bring you all home alive. But this I swear... when we go into battle, I will be the first to step on the field and I will be the last to step off. And I will leave no one behind... dead or alive. We will all come home together."
With these words, on the day before he was to lead his men off to war, Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore addressed his soldiers and their families........
This movie is a must see and clearly is the best picture of the year. IMHO.

...Funny, isn't it, how plastic surgery was not in evidence in a most animated MADELINE STOWE at the Los Angeles Premiere of .."WE WERE SOLDIERS".. last February...?
...Me thinks that what we all saw up there the screen was an Actress' visual interpretation of how Lt. Col. HAL G. MOORE's wife must have felt inside as her husband marched off to the 1st Major Battle Operations of the Vietnam War with the whole World watching, as in frightened to death.
...In real life Mrs. JULIE MOORE is the warmest, most extorverted and affirming person you'd ever have to prevelige to meet.
...It seems Art has a way of telling a story its own way...?

I wish it would be nominated.
My predictions are 'About Schmidt' with Jack Nicholson (the funniest movie of the year so far)
'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' (darkhorse to win, like Rocky in 1976)
'Gangs of New York' (for Martin Scorsese who has never won best director)
'The Hours' (one artsy-fartsy literary picture is alway in there)
And perhaps 'Lord of the Rings-The Two Towers' or 'Antwone Fisher' as the last selection

I'd nominate We Were Soldiers and The Two Towers, certainly, but the "story makes sense" requirement leaves Signs out of consideration.

I even somewhat liked Signs... but it was so full of holes GMTA. Would you pay good money to watch a movie about humans wanting to colonize a planet three-quarters covered in sulfuric acid?

Unfortunately the Academy Awards are the equivalent of a high school popularity contest so I don't expect WE WERE SOLDIERS to get any recognition except for maybe an adapted screenplay nomination.
Regardless, cheers to Mel Gibson for having the ba*** to produce this film as a tribute to you guys who served there. Maybe Hollywood is slowly coming around, but we shouldn't look to the awards for any sort of validation of the USA. Hollywood gives us Nazi priests, kindly abortionists, white supremacist Republicans, saintly homosexuals, and every other reverse stereotype one can imagine.

GMTA? Can't figure that one out. (Duh alert.)

GMTA = "Great Minds Think Alike."

Apparently not that great of a mind, at least on my part. Thanks.
AR or anyone else: Here's a question. I happened to channel surf into what may have been "Capitol Gang" the other day and caught the tale-end of a comment. I THINK one of the talking heads was saying that "Gangs of NY" sucks bec it did not acurately portray the riot scene as being caused by the Irish rebelling against being drafted. Seems that they didn't want anything to do with giving their lives to free slaves. Of course, Scorcesi(sp?) didn't want to put that in there bec that wouldn't be PC.
Is that true? I mean about Scorcesi and the moving being historically inacurate because of the PC stuff. I know that the riot caused by reluctant Irish not wanting to free slaves is true.
To: ALOHA RONNIE
All praise to Mr. Gibson. He is the anti-Alec Baldwin/Sean Penn. A true patriot! That is enough to insure his efforts being ignored by AMPAS. "Braveheart" flew in under the radar. It won't happen again.
To: Lee'sGhost
What a great find:
...While recommending .."WE WERE SOLDIERS".. for Best Picture Oscar...
...MICHAEL MEDVED was blasting .."GANGS OF NEW YORK".. for its misrepresentations of the Irish-American Riots and for showing the Twin Towers at the end directly implying that America succeeded because of Gang Warfare throughout our history.
...I applaud Director SCORCESI for restoring a Movie for our Times, 1961's .."EL CID".. starrring CHARLETON HESTON and SOPHIA LOREN, which was about the Muslims trying to take over Christian Europe 1,000 years ago by first invading a baby Spain. By bringing factious villages together to fight the invaders, and giving us the nation-state of Spain in the process, EL CID saved Western Civilization for a 1,000 years.
...Now it's our turn.
To: ALOHA RONNIE
Thanks Ronnie. I hope it gets a nomination also. Good solid conservative movie. ;)
Hope you had a blessed and holy Christmas, and a happy New Year.

No it doesn't. I'm as interested in the history of the Vietnam War as anyone else I know, and except for the battle scenes, I could barely sit through that cornball melodrama. Outside of the battle action it was a complete hog's head filled with runny cheese.
