He actually said call in Carter to keep the Koreans busy with a carrot while we pull our boys out of the beaten zone and then out of Korea entirely... I like that plan.

So do I. We are in a very dangerous position in South Korea. We have enough forces deployed there to suffer a lot of casualties, but not enough to turn the tide against a DPRK onslaught. Defense of the Korean peninsula would require immediate and massive reinforcement, which would not be possible if an attack came while we were fully engaged in Southwest Asia. We would have to resort to nuclear weapons.

Making matters worse is that the South Koreans don't think they need us anymore, and they don't want us there. So I agree with Hackworth -- if we can't adequately defend South Korea or our own troops deployed there, we should pull out and let the Koreans settle their own affairs.

The problem with that plan is that it involves Jimmy Carter. If you want to carry out a delicate stalling plan, don't use an idiot as your point man.

Agreed. As I recall, Hackworth's main achievement as a battlefield commander was in setting up battles his men could WIN without undue casualties. He has a good nose for sucker traps and this is a big one.

I question whether the North Koreans could make it to the Han River but the casualties and prop damage from their arty, tac missiles and "one or two" nukes would be horrendous. Nightly, I pray for the 2nd Inf. Div. & 7th Air Force and their families.
