Wait a second you guys, you're missing the beautiful point of this whole story. Whether or not the cop was right in what he did, you are missing the entire point. Here are people who are at the bottom of life's ladder and yet they found it in their hearts to take pity on someone who stood up for them. Their gifts might sound paultry, but they are HUGE in the sacrifice they represent. These, too, are Americans and let's face it, Americans have big hearts and a generous spirit.
This is a wonderful story.

BTW, what exactly are Heart Cockles?

"if I should ever be unfortunate enough to become homeless, the LAST place in the world I would stay would be New York, Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, etc etc etc"
The weather stinks but the benefits aren't bad. I've heard that small towns around the country pawn off their homeless on us by paying for them to take buses here.

"This is a wonderful story."
Put down the egg nog. Norm Siegel, of ACLU fame, is "representing" the officer. I'm sure he arranged for some homeless advocates to raise the funds in an attempt to embarass the NYPD and mitigate the guy's punishment. Breaking down the bonds of discipline here is just a stepping stone towards a main goal of the liberals in NYC- destroying the NYPD as a bastion of law and order.

Oh come on....we can discuss that tomorrow. This is Christmas eve. Come on now....smile.....you know you want to.
Merry Christmas

Hey, if you want to look at it that way...Merry Christmas to you too...
I don't want to beat a dead horse, but all is not what it seems with this story. Please don't put your heart in it, there are so many other good things going on. Like the concern, unacknowledged by the media, that is shown here every day by cops for people in trouble. This one reeks to me of liberal politics at work.

Newwahoo, this is not a night for reality. This is a night to believe. We who come to FreeRepublic every day fight the good fight every day. We see beyond the surface deep into the motivations. But once each year, even the most realistic of us must take time to just.....believe.
I know what's going on here. But tonight I just don't want to look at it. Tonight I want magic. Just for tonight I want peace, and kindness, and goodness.

I can not believe the heartless bastards who posted here agreeing that the office was wrong. I agree with just about all socio-political views on this site but you folks are being just plain righteous. You're a disgrace.
I doubt you would be begging your insurance company to hit with points and surcharges if a cop let you off for speeding.
Friggin hypocrites....Merry F-ing Christmas to you too!

Hit the nog then and may you have a Merry Christmas. Just hit up my profile first so you know that I'm not just spouting off on the subject.
All the best to you and yours in the new year to come...

Its a sad situation. Do you bang out homelss people for things like urinating in public and trespassing or do you just make "normal" people pay for doing things like that? Does sympathy win out, or is no man above the law? You don't have to believe me, but I've heard that actual concern for the poor had little to do with this story.

Great. Another chapter in the breakdown of order within our society. Wonder if the department let him keep the money? Most departments have a clause against gift taking from the public. Sounds like a bribe to me!!!

Homeless people also contributed . . . even a portion of their welfare checks.
Warms my heart! Merry Christmas
