I remember reading on FR a couple of years ago about how some Scots in the Eastern Isles were carping about the government spending big bucks, err, pounds, to teach the school kids the old tounge, Gaelic. In much of the East of Scotland the old tounge is Norse, not Scots Gaelic, and the locals felt rather like Arizona Indians whose children were being forcibily educated in Spainish, and told that it was their mother tounge.
