"I mean, what [Lott] did was state publicly what many of them have stated privately over many years in the back roads and back streets of the South," Name names or apologize. These blanket statements and broad brushes are going to backfire big time.

"Name names or apologize. ..."
The dems will use Lott's statements and their interpretation of them to inflame black voters, just as they used James Byrd and the "Fla disinfranchisement" to stir passions to get our their base. I wonder if it would be possible for a pre-election media blitz to repeat the "they are just closet racists" statements of Bill, Hillary, et al, to show southerners, that the democrat party thinks they are evil racists and white trash. Is Hillary handing the GOP a southern sweep in 2004?
The media was quick to demand that Lott explain his words, which he never really did effectively. Will Tim Russert and Chris Matthews ask Hillary at every opportunity to explain her words and to "name names and provide evidence that "they all say this on the back roads...?"
Anti-south bigotry is as offensive to me as anti-black bigotry is to black people. The difference is, the former is fashionable.
