Commentary: Lott Throws In The Towel (Conservative base will be gone)

Commentary: Lott Throws In The Towel Gary Bauer President, American Values

After days of endless apologizing, Trent Lott has thrown in the towel and resigned as Senate Majority Leader. Late last night he began making phone calls to GOP colleagues to let them know his decision.

Also over night the White House began a more concerted push to replace Lott with Senator Bill Frist, who will now emerge as the "frontrunner."

Frist is a savvy media personality, but he angered many conservatives by interfering in Republican primaries around the country, virtually always in favor of the moderate candidate over the conservative. And he was a staunch supporter of former Surgeon General Satcher, who was pro-abortion. I hope a more reliable conservative-- either Nickles or Santorum-- will throw their hat in the ring.

Now comes the hard part. This mess doesn't end with Lott's resignation. The GOP needs to find its backbone. One example: There are reports that the Administration is now afraid to go into court against the University of Michigan's offensive racial quota system that selects students from certain minority groups regardless of grades while rejecting white students with much higher grades.

For 30 years the Republicans have opposed these quasi-quota schemes. Are we now going to throw in the towel because of the smear campaign against Republicans of the last two weeks?

Some insiders are suggesting there will be reluctance at the White House to nominate conservative judges. Such reports better be inaccurate or the conservative base of the party will be gone.

Let me bring up again one easy way for the White House to signal that it knows how to play hardball and help Americans of all races. Many Washington D.C. schools are abysmal and the children, mostly black, trapped in them are ill served. The White House should send a school voucher program to Capitol Hill on the first day of the new Congress just for the District of Columbia. Ted Kennedy will scream. Hillary Clinton will pull her hair out. Daschle will reach for the Maalox. And they will line up and vote "no" against those black families and in favor of the teacher unions.

Last year Bush dropped his voucher plan because Kennedy refused to let it out of Committee, but there should be no cave in this time.

I'm beginning to suspect that TLBSHOW is not pro-Lott, nor anti-Frist, so much as anti-Bush or, especially, anti-Rove.

Glad to see someone gets it. He is anti-Bush. He has been on every thread he can find trashing Bush, Rove and Frist. The ACU likes Frist. His ratings for 2000 and 2001 were 92% and 100%.

This whole thing was an amazing display of lib/rat media power - endless Lott "racist" dialogue with the NY and LA Times, etc, and the lib networks on and on with even the slickmeister coming out from under his rock.

Lott got caught committing thought crime which is doubleplusungood, and had to be made an unperson.

I believe we should see what Frist does before we cry in our towels.
What's your agenda?

Now you're reduced to posting Gary Bauer's rantings. We remember Bauer endorsing McLame in 2000 out of spite. You appear to be doing the same thing here.

Well, TLB is in a bind. He can't post any more Ann Coulter articles because she asked for Lott to resign too, and TLB stated that those who asked Lott to resign should be banned from Free Republic.

So Gary Bauer, Pat Buchanan, and Robert Novak columns it is.

>>>Looks like the Republican's are starting to clean our house up ..

So you agree with the liberal establishment, that Republicans are racists?

The GOP needs be united as a political party, if it wants to be successful and advance PresBushes agenda over the next two years and beyond. Taking these hits on the race issue, does the GOP no good.

The Supreme Court will decide the affirmative action cases. The US Government is not a party to the cases. Who cares what they do?

Manipulation of definitions is also a lawyer specialty. I could post a vanity as to why I think I am the one of the few true blue conservatives in this neighborhood. Think of the flames. Folks could save on their heating bills.

A loser, a has-been, and a never-was. I sense a pattern here.

Quite right. Folly is defined as acting consistently against your self interest. The Democrats foolishly (for them) have handed the Republicans a real victory, for Lott's successor will have more spine (could not have less spine) and not cave in so often to the Democrats' whines and demands in the "interest" of collegiality and "getting along".

How Lott handed this past few weeks of "apologizing" speaks volumes on why the Republican Senate has been so tame, so docile, so unimaginative in recent years. Lott just wanted to "get along". He has no real principles to guide him. After these past few weeks, we see Trett Lott clearly - everything is 'all about him'. He will say anything to curry favor - anything to be liked. He announces that the definition of a racist is one who feels superior to another, and then he knocks down the straw dog by saying to the black audience that he does not feel 'superior' to them. Alas, he even goes so far as to insist he is and always will be for affirmative action. Lott tells people what he thinks they want to hear, and only a man without a conscience or principles can do that consistently.

I say, in the coming months and years, we will be thanking the Democrats over and over again for creating an atmosphere in which Trent Lott was forced to resign his position as Majority Leader.

And the Republicans played the Trent Lott implosion well: "You can do anything to me, b'er Fox," said the Tar Baby, "but don't put me into that Briar Patch."

You are on some kind of Crusade to stick up for a man who would sell you down the river faster than you can blink. Unfortunately you don't understand the effect this will have on southern people. I'' tell you this, it's opposite of what you are trying to say .

I have a hard time taking seriously somebody who supported McCain over Bush for the nomination and can't flip a pancake without falling off the stage.

Today is a good day for the conservative movement in America, and the United States in general.

Trent Lott, statesman extraordinare, has stymied the subversive lefts attempt to turn him into the next Newt Gingrich and has selflessly stepped aside to allow Frist to become Senate Majority Leader.

As Hasterts replacement of the unfairly maligned and truly founding father like Newt Gingrich has thwarted the race baiting souless evil democrat socialist crooks villification of the GOP leadership, so shall Frists appointment deny the leftist propagandists scum their pound of flesh.

Merry Christmas Senator Lott, and thank you for upholding the code of honor.

Mo, this is one fight that is not going to get settled soon on FR. Both sides are digging their heels in. I am exhausted from the flame wars. I'm thinking this is all going to turn out ok in the end. Maybe not right away, but in the long run. The President will make lemonade out of the lemons he has been given.

I sure agree with you about the people in the South. When they find out they are all being painted as racists, the RATS won't win a race down there for 100 years. I live in Wisconsin and I am furious. hillary's remarks today will come back to haunt her and her race-baiting party.
