The party was supposed to circle the wagons after such an idiot gaffe? The dems would have LOVED that! They could have demonized the entire party for years over that, and made some headway to boot.

Can you imagine the political hay the dems would have made, if Leader Lott had allowed anti-affirmative action (read: strict constitutionalist) judge nominees come up for a vote, after his BET promises??

Many delicious opportunities for the dems have now been taken away from them. They can yell "racism" all they want, but they'll just be howling into the wind.

I wonder if somewhere there is a group photo showing a smiling young Robert Byrd standing with others at the feet of a black man hanging from a tree. These hideous photos were common during that time, and they were usually turned into postcards. There were often family picnics going on at the same time, and no one bothered to wear sheets.
