The .220 Swift is the horsepower king in .22 caliber, with possible velocities of over 4000 fps. A couple a things though...legend has it that in the early days, the projectiles would vaporize coming out of the muzzle once in a while due to the intense speeds obtained from this cartridge. Modern bullet design and materials have addressed this problem, I'm sure.

The other claim is that such hyper-velocity leads to rather rapid barrel wear. Since varmint hunts tend to burn up a lot more rounds than big game hunts, this could be a concern.

I personally can't vouch for either situation, as I have never owned one, (would very much like to someday though). For now, I am satisfied with my .22-250 at 3850 fps. and short bolt throw, (the Swift is a long ol' cartridge). Hope this helps. Maybe someone who has more experience with the Swift can chime in here.

Do you have golden eagles out there that take care of the dead ones?

Yep. Unless the hawks, coyotes, feral dogs or an occasional bald eagle gets there first.
