Those touting Lott's 20 "solid" votes are Lott partisans trying to scare off potential opponents by making Lott's survival as ML seem inevitable. They've also made it clear that they will try to destroy anyone who goes against them, hence their quick counter-attack on Nickles and their clear inclination to compare Lott's voting record with any vocal opponent (thus "tarring" conservatives with the same racist brush that some Dems have used against him). Think of Lott and his supporters as an old, crippled up tomcat, puffing itself up to look bigger and more dangerous than it really is.

While I've long believed that Lott should step down, I used to feel somewhat sorry for him. No more. His race-pandering and clear disregard for his party, fellow Senators, and the furtherance of a conservative agenda, leaves me feeling nothing but disgust for him as both a "leader" and a person.

It is time for him to go.

Good point. I'm not going to say Lott's people are not telling the truth. I'm going to say they'd say they were confident he was going to get the votes and win even if they weren't. I'm going to say they'd say that even if they knew he didn't have the votes and had no chance in perdition of getting them. I can't remember too many candidates who would admit they were losing or beaten until they absolutely had to submit to the reality of the vote count.

Maybe these guys are telling the truth. I think it's a mistake for the senators if they do. Senator Lott is not a bad guy, but he was a mediocre leader at best before this. His initial remarks prove him not so much a racist as too dumb to stay out of trouble, and since [trouble] rolls downhill, when he got himself in trouble, he put us in trouble. And in the course of trying to get out of trouble, he basically showed that he was willing to sell the rest of us down the river and ship us COD as long as he could stay on. He wants us to pay for his screwup. Nice show of loyalty...and at this point, I am only too willing to repay it. Trent, you really want to rehabilitate yourself? Go sit in the back and be quiet for the next four years. That ought to do it nicely.
