Sources on Capitol Hill say that Incoming Majority Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi has collected assurances from more than 20 Republican Senators that they will support him in a new election to determine whether Lott will remain as Senate Majority Leader.

'We have got well over 20 and are approaching 26,' says one Lott supporter.

Twenty Six votes ( out of 51 total GOP members) are required for Lott to keep his job.

Or at least here on FR.

My perception may be skewed, how are the callers to Rush's show being screened? Pro-Lott or against, or down the middle..

Being a dufus in private life is no crime but being a dufus when you are in charge of the countries pocketbook definitely IS a crime, as is being a dufus when you are in charge of handling legislation that will affect us for years to come.

So, the short answer is, no there's not much difference between a dufus and a criminal, just a matter of intent.

So, given the choice between Jerry Ford and Bill Clinton as president, you think it wouldn't make much difference which we picked?

they won't portray us as a "racist" party, if Lott steps down from Majority Leader?

They didn't portray Bush as a "black" killer in the last presidential election? What about the dragging death of that black, whose daughter said, in a national TV campaign that a vote for bush or a republican was JUST LIKE HER DAD BEING DRAGGED TO HIS DEATH ALL OVER AGAIN... or "every time you vote republican, another black church burns, another brother is killed..." eh?

We won before with their accusations. They have nothing else. Whatever happens to lott, we will be portrayed as racists and that is all the democrats have, because you see, they are NOT IN POWER... and if they keep pushing the race thing, THEY WILL LOSE AGAIN.

AMERICANS are tired of the "poor black people" crap. Especially the BLACK AMERICANS who have discovered the truth. Republicans are the party of Lincoln. Democrats were the pro slavery party. They still are.

Lott will survive.
We will move on.
We don't need their votes.
Black Americans are just .... AMERICANS.
Eventually, they too will stop believing the "republicans hate blacks and want to starve seniors" crap, and vote in their own best interests.

Done right, 18 mos of repubican rule can go a LONG way towards putting truth up against the lie in tangible, believable ways that cannot be ignored.

Dumping TRENT is tantamount to admission of racism, and Lott is NO racist. This is a tempest in a teapot, and will die. Whether Lott stays or goes. And America sees what is being done... they know, this is a put-up JOB by the democrat hacks of the old failed regime... hillary's goon squad.

OLD TACTICS "yawn...."

Sorry, wasn't paying attention to Rush today. My hunch is that this whole thing isn't making much of an impact on the rank & file one way or the other.

Why would I want to book a stateroom on the Titanic?

If the Republican Party does not repudiate racism at every opportunity, they are going to be the minority party soon, and for a long time to come.

The difference between Lott and Bush's past, however, is Bush's history of race relations is squeaky clean. Lott's is filthy dirty.

Bush doesn't make racist-sounding statements. Lott? Yes. Continually.

No one said Bush was raised in a culture steeped in racism. Lott admitted he was (BET interview).

Bush doesn't claim to have ever been a racist. Lott did (again, BET interview).

Bush never said the country would have been better off with a Dixiecrat president in 1948. Lott did.

See the difference?

Good point. I'm not going to say Lott's people are not telling the truth. I'm going to say they'd say they were confident he was going to get the votes and win even if they weren't. I'm going to say they'd say that even if they knew he didn't have the votes and had no chance in perdition of getting them. I can't remember too many candidates who would admit they were losing or beaten until they absolutely had to submit to the reality of the vote count.

Maybe these guys are telling the truth. I think it's a mistake for the senators if they do. Senator Lott is not a bad guy, but he was a mediocre leader at best before this. His initial remarks prove him not so much a racist as too dumb to stay out of trouble, and since [trouble] rolls downhill, when he got himself in trouble, he put us in trouble. And in the course of trying to get out of trouble, he basically showed that he was willing to sell the rest of us down the river and ship us COD as long as he could stay on. He wants us to pay for his screwup. Nice show of loyalty...and at this point, I am only too willing to repay it. Trent, you really want to rehabilitate yourself? Go sit in the back and be quiet for the next four years. That ought to do it nicely.

They play the "race card big time" EVERYTIME... NONE bigger than the now failed: "everytime you vote for bush another black gets dragged to his death by a bunch of white boys in the south...." crap they TRIED last presidential election.

AMERICA is sick of the race card. We are on to their game (most of us that is).
There may be a segment of the population who votes and cares about it every time they hear "pubbies hate blacks", but thank God, that segment is smaller each election cycle.

NON ISSUE. Whether lott stays or goes. He is NO racist.
I do think he is incompetant, always have. The agenda will move on anyway, and the attempt by DEMOCRATS to nationalize this next election via the RACE, HOMOSEXUAL, ANIMAL RIGHTS, FEMINIST, DYING SENIORS, AKA "rainbo coalition" crap, will FAIL. THEY no longer can pull together a working majority out of their old "cornicopia of victims" hat.

They are dead meat and their desperation is showing clearly in this tactic. THIS is a good sign we have them hurting big time. LOOK for riots in the streets if this stuff fails to get them back in power. THAT is what to expect of the neo-bolshevics, like hillary's followers, when they don't get to be in power. Violence in the streets. Expect it. Prepare for it. They won't win... but we got to face reality, that the hate america crowd wants its pound of flesh at any cost.

You think the race card is bad, just wait till we see what they try next.

I want to see the NAMES of the people who support him, how about you?

Ain't it funny how the last two nights we've seen pro-Lott propaganda to the effect that "Trent holds all the cards, there won't be another vote, and everything is a fait accompli?"

If that's true, why are Lott's staff and allies shoring up support, counting votes, and issuing press releases to shift the pr momentum?

Someone should remind them that Lott is a genius and everything's in the bag.

If Lott stays, we can all say bye, bye to the newly won GOP Congressional majority come 2004 and maybe the Presidency cause the GOP will be potrayed as a "racist" party with a "racist" leader.

You are right for the wrong reasons.

OUR voters don't care about that "racist" crap. We will lose because with Trent Lott the first honkie in the Black Caucus, the GOP will look the same as the Democrats. And when people see Democrats and Democrat wannabes, they vote the former.

White voters don't want more "affirmative action", they want U. of Michigan's program overturned. White voters don't want reparations. White voters don't want tax cuts and credits to every one who is not white.

Who gives a sh*t about black voters? They will never vote for us anyway. All we need is 65% of the white vote and we win every time.

Done right, 18 mos of repubican rule can go a LONG way towards putting truth up against the lie in tangible, believable ways that cannot be ignored.

And you think that Trent Cave-A-Lott can possibly do that right? He didn't have enough conviction to rule conservatively with majorities of 56-44, 55-45 and VP (50-50) BEFORE there was anything resembling a personal controversy. What makes you think he has enough conviction to rule conservatively with at best a 51-49 majority (remember, the Dem's call for equal committee funding happened immediately after Landrieu won and before Lott put his foot in his mouth again)? If anything, he's even less likely to lead in a conservative fashion (he's pledged to try to get the other Pubbies on board quotas and not even considering conservative judges not approved by the NAALCP).

gridlock says:
I don't care what the Democrats care about with regards to race. I care about what the Republicans think about matters of race.

What's it gonna be?
------

Well how about this? The more this gets played no one is going to give a damn about the racist card again. It will be a finished issue in American Politics. One that will never again be able to be used by the rats AGAINST REPUBLICANS.

Clintons statements about the south went way over the top and the american people heard and saw it for what it is and what he and the democrats stand for, Nothing more than race baiters and racist themselves that want to keep blacks down and mad at white people and start a race war in America.

We can end racist as a issue now if we republicans and conservatives take a stand.

That is why this is playing on and on. Its the rats last chance and they know it. If they lose this one issue they have no base they have nothing. Democrat Rats will be finished.

How is that for an answer. And this is why FR is under such attack by the fake freepers who are democrats. They know what is at stake.

... fear dominated reasoning, and irrational baloney.

there is no racism in our party any ways near that of the "cornocopia of victims" party...

"if we don't admit we are evil we may lose the next election...." is a self defeating premise.
LOTT is NO racist.

We will weather this "choice" of senate majority leader just fine. And any black who believes trent and the pubbies are racist--just because the democratic spin machine, press and the "cornicopia of victims" talking heads-- said so, wouldn't have voted for us anyways.

We won the last presidential election without them. We will win even more surely in the next cycle, which has apparently already begun.

Watching democrats go nutso with this crap, because they are panic driven by being out of power, is rather entertaining. Too bad self-loathing republicans are so paranoid over the very clear 'race baiting' that is going on here.

Sit back and laugh... it's funny.
We will win. They will be wiped out by their own hypocracy. Americans are sometimes slow, but not stupid. Their "cornicopia of victims" is fractured, and falling apart. that is why they lost the last THREE election cycles. And this election they have LOTS more SENATE SEATS to defend than we do... I expect riots by this summer as the 'neo bolshivecs" go insane in their desperate drive for power.

Playing the "race card" is not the end, it is the beginning of their attempt to incite race riots, that MIGHT get them some power back next election. LOOK for such things in each area of their "rainbow" constituency... It's coming so don't be surprised.

Politics is war by other means.
