I'd have to look at the map, but I recall the ruined city of Osgiliath was along the banks of the Anduin in between Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul. Seeing as how the first brigades of his army was already there, I would think as soon as the wraith sensed the presence of the ring they would command the troops halt their march to Gondor and begin searching for the ring. All nine wraths would be sent right there, and all of Saurons armies would be unleashed.

Speaking of maps, did anyone here have to stifle a hoot when Faramir whipped out a dead copy of the map in the original LOTR trilogy? The fonts were even the same. Didn't Tolkien draw the original himself?

Yes, Osgoliath is very close. The servants of the enemy, luckily are not very bright, or they would have won a long time ago, and the story would have been a short one!
I think the scene was inspired by the near-miss scene at Minus Morgul... where the Lord of the Nazgul rides out with the army, senses Frodo's presence, stops for a minute but rides on... Either not sure of what he sensed or already tasked with other matters... We do know that he reported it back somehow... because the orcs at Cirith Ungol were on the lookout for a spy...
Ready for my re-read of the books! And ready for the next movie!
