Compensation for Sept 11 sackings

Two cleaners who were sacked after disrupting a silent tribute to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks by throwing paper planes have each been awarded £7,000 compensation.

Arshad Ali and Aqeel Khan were dismissed for gross misconduct after enraging colleagues during the two-minute tribute but took their case against their employer to an industrial tribunal, claiming unfair dismissal.

The tribunal was due to meet next year but the pair were offered, and accepted, an out-of-court settlement.

While most staff at the Land Rover plant in Solihull, West Midlands, stood in silence, Mr Ali and Mr Khan were said to have jeered, made jibes and made paper planes, which they threw around.

Their actions angered other staff so much that they had to be escorted off the site by a senior manager. They were sacked from the contract cleaner Commando shortly after.

Caroline Spelmen, Conservative MP for Meriden, said yesterday that Land Rover workers were "incensed" at the payout. She accused Commando of showing a "gross lack of sensitivity".

She said: "Land Rover workers who lost their jobs last week will feel less than happy. A lot of people will find this difficult to accept."

The Transport and General Workers' Union, which supported the men, said that managers had been guilty of a "kneejerk reaction" in sacking them. Dave Osborne, national officer, said: "They were not aware that the client had called for a two-minute silence."

Gino Akardi, Commando chief executive, said he was "legally obliged not to discuss this case". Land Rover declined to comment as the men were not its employees.

A third man who was sacked, Tasawar Hussein, is awaiting an industrial tribunal hearing next year.

Man, I hate unions.

My division's union rep won't come into my office because I have an autographed picture of Ronald Reagan on my wall.

Now if it only worked on the other eight-legged roaches in the office.

I was chairman of a union unit back in the 70's and became completely disillusioned by the back-stabbing going on between members and having to defend people who should have been out the door. When I brought my concerns to the fellow above me in the chain of command, he said,
'Yeah, but unions are a necessary evil'.

Pretty amazing, to pay these guys throwing paper airplanes around the room to celebrate the deaths of the Twin Towers for being fired.. Yet hard working individuals are loosing their jobs in layoffs, due in part to the economic hard times from terrorism.

Calling evil good, the 'justices' march on... As in the days of Noah, the world has become so evil that justice is not served.

Arshad Ali and Aqeel Khan...

Good Islamic names, now stick that 10 grand check in their wallet pocket and give their pro-terrorists arses a good kick back to the turd world country they came from.

That would be the equivalent of a cross/garlic, wouldn't it? LOL.

Actually, I've come to the conclusion over the past few years that unions have a place, particularly in divisions of some large corporations. Their presence can deter clueless corporate office weenies from ill advised policies that don't allow effective management.

This doesn't mean that they should be able to compel membership, intervene excessively with work rules, or uses dues to support political candidates. It also didn't mean that when I sat in on a "counseling" session and found myself agreeing 100% with the shop steward, I didn't know it was time to GTF out of there. >:o
