INSIDERS WARN: STEP DOWN OR BE PUSHED Mon Dec 16 2002 22:45:08 ET 2002
In words that seemed sure to surprise and possibly infuriate a good portion of Sen. Trent Lott's traditional political base, he told his interviewer, Ed Gordon of Black Entertainment Television, "There has been immoral leadership in my part of the country for a long time."
MORE
Many Republicans said Lott might not survive until a planned Jan. 6 Republican meeting, as some prominent party officials predicted privately that the Mississippi Republican might have to relinquish his post even sooner if it became clear he did not have the support of a majority of Republican senators or the White House, the NEW YORK TIMES is reporting on Tuesday.
"One outside adviser with close ties to the administration said Lott had become a "walking pinata" and that the Mississippi Republican's departure from the Senate leadership had now become inevitable.
"Political physics has set in -- it's only a matter of time," the adviser said. "The best scenario is for Lott to come to the obvious conclusion himself and avoid a painful confrontation."
Another sign of Lott's growing political problems were private discussions among some of his colleagues to find an alternative position for Lott, other than his current leadership role. Such a position, such as a committee chairmanship, might help keep him from resigning his seat in the event he is dislodged as leader, the paper claims.
Impacting.

And Lott doesn't have enough seniority for a committee chair unless they make him the new head of Homeland Security.

Stick a fork in Chester, he is done.
The spineless boob sould shuffle off to the back bench ASAP.
DUMP LOTT NOW!

I disagree with Rove on Frist, Nickels or Santorum would be better.

That's just BS. Lott has proven to be a liability, plain and simple. Rove didn't bring this about - Lott did, and now he is paying the consequences. I know you love to bash Rove, but give it a rest.

Lott's spinelessness continues. He's becoming quite a spectacle to behold. Why not admit him to a state-run psychiatric hospital for not being 100% politically correct ... much like the Soviets did for those who did not tow the communist line.
Don't get me wrong. I look forward to the day when Lott is no longer the Majority Leader in the Senate. But, his unending apologies and groveling before the very liberals who think perjury is okay is downright embarrasing. Enough already. It's time to "move on."

Since you have all the answers, TLB, who should be majority leader?

Rove made a miscalculation on this BET interview.
I would have called up Bernie Shaw and had some sort of a special on PBS or something.
Tonight was not a good night for Lott..

For us, they would be better. However, you have to consider Chaffee, Collins, Snow, and Specter. I am sure there are others, but those are the four who would object to Nickles or Santorum.
Lott got his position because he was acceptable to both the conservatives and the moderates. With such a narrowly held majority, we cannot afford to alienate those people, unless you want to go back to being the minority.
The Senate is not an easy nut to crack. Frist might be the best choice because he is non-threatening to those moderate senators, and he is good on television.
It does no good to put in a leader who causes people to bolt or who cannot muster votes.

"There has been immoral leadership in my part of the country for a long time." WTH is that supposed to mean?
Conservatives will take that one way. But liberals [his BET audience] would obviously take it another way.
Has he lost his mind?
To: Digger
Why the hell do half of you people think this is some kind of "conspiracy" by Rove to moderate the GOP? Your posts border on the paranoia. There is no grand conspiracy afoot here. Lott is just an idiot who made a stupid comment. He is unable to further our agenda, and therefore needs to go.

Lott is the elected majority leader. Only the senate repubs can change that.
