Here is Bella's quote referring to the things that really set me off:

I have seen people AGREEING with the Dixiecrat platform's OPPOSITION of the repeal of miscegenation statutes, people saying that "things were better" when there was segregation, etc. MOST of these comments are still available and standing.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No I don't. And I think that Lott may have been taken way out of context here. But it was a gaff by a weak, unprincipled, moderate politician in a leadership position he doesn't belong in or deserve to have. He got it by the good ole boy Senority system and he needs to go ... for what ever reason and by whatever means. Nichols is right to raise the question and if we didn't have such a wishy washy, please em at any cost Republican Senate Lott would be long gone. If this gets him out, so be it. I just want him out. PERIOD.

Jackson and the Dems have been pushing all the buttons for a long time. The GOP just doesn't know how to be the majority party. They were in the wilderness for so long. They still haven't figured it out ... How to lead on pricipled Constitutional Conservatism. It is all about power, money, and more power and neither party SEEMS to give a hoot about the Constitution from their actions as "leaders".

Here endeth the rant. /;-)

You've hit the nail on the head with this post. I'm going to add a few thoughts.

There is an ugly undercurrent in some threads, not only the ones about Trent Lott, but particularly on the immigration threads as well. At the very least, there are some who have very low expectations - which the President has called "soft bigotry." I'm trying to be charitable, but I am, hitting the limit, myself.

There are some folks who would rather lose, and plunge this country into an abyss, if the cost of victory is to dilute what they perceive as "true" conservatism. And some of that "true" conservatism is stuff I would rather not be associated with. Personally, I'd prefer Howard Stern's company to the bigots.

I think it is time for some housecleaning - and I'm going to be a lot more free with the abuse button as time allows.

I do not think that Lott is the best leader of the Senate but I do think that if he is pushed very hard and humiliated, he may leave the Senate and in this case it is the disaster of the Republican Party. Because of my great love to the Republican Party, I do not want to see this happening. If Lott agrees to step down but remains in the Senate, I have no problem what so ever with this because we will keep our majority intact and President Bush agenda will pass.

Agreed that Lott is not the best leader of the Senate. I would say that on a scale of 1 to 10 he is maybe a 5 or even perhaps a 4½ now (some could argue even less than that now). He has a (long) record of being a bit too cozy with the opposition party and far too willing to compromise and share power when it wasn't (or isn't) necessary. As for as being humiliated, what do you think he has done to the Republican party, once again!? I don't want the party back under the control of the liberals yet again either but if Lott sells us all out even more than he has already then what's the real difference. Naturally I'm speaking from a rhetorical standpoint here.

If we are indeed better off with Lott than without him then what does that really say about the party itself? He is just too spineless, wishy-washy and non-thinking on the key issues that are important to us, the backbone of the party, the faithful conservative. Lott is just the epitome of what is wrong with the Republican party today. He is about as close to being a RINO without actually being one so openly and widely declared.

The philosophy of "to win at any cost" is what gives the GOP people like Trent Lott, 'Jumpin' Jim Jeffords and et al. I say, how much more can the GOP stand of these kind of chameleon style (in kind) R(INO)epublicans? With these kind of Republicans it sort of lends credence to the saying of "two sides of the same coin" or "birds of a feather tend to flock together".

When you are a public servant, you hold office on public whim. When you loose the confidence of those that put you there, rightly or wrongly, you may expect to loose what ever role that you are assigned.

The Republican Senators in their caucus will soon say where they stand on their confidence in Lott, each with their own concerns for their political future, for they are tied to him and his image by his association as their caucus leader.

You ask:
The question is why does Trent Lott need to step down as the Senate Majority leader? If this happens will the GOP gain more votes in the black community? Of course not. We need to remember that the black people in America has been voting overwhelmingly for the Democrats for a very long time despite that this party has produced...etc.

The question is not about the Democrats, black voters in general or the media. The question is about the Senate Republican caucus and Lott's abject failure to represent their vision and civic voice.

If he was not elected to that leadership post, Lott's constituants would say, "yeah, he may be a neanderthal, but he is Our neanderthal" and the media and Jesse Jacksons of the world would let it die for lack of traction. But the reason the caucus will let him go on the sixth of January, if he does not withdraw on his own, is his own failure to move beyound the regionalisms of his youth in his earliest days in politics.

You ask:
What principal are we talking about?

And it can be asked in kind, what conservative principle allowed the disaffected Dixiecrats to become Republicans in many cases and Liberals in others?

I'll tell you what principle: Expediancy. And that is the same principle that will let the Senate Caucus say goodbye to a loyal role player who was usually the best a being a fence sitter.

If you can't master the foot work required at this level of ballroom dancing, you better leave the floor.

Political life is a mass of ego in a suit with a smile. If Lott is a statesman and loyal to his principles, he sits on the back bench and lets his vote count in every way he can. If he is controled by that ego, he quits in dispair and revenge against those that failed to save him from the results of his hour of stupidly revisiting his youthful shortsightedness.

That is what is happening and what will come to pass. No amount of hand wringing will stop it.

"That is what is happening and what will come to pass. No amount of hand wringing will stop it."

And I will add, no amount of rhetoric, bias, teeth-gnashing, name-calling, accusations of racism, flaming, race-baiting, excuse-making, explanatory defenses, or non-stop brainiacs weighing in on these threads will stop it either. But WHEW......what a ride these last few days have been, huh? And 6 months...or a year from now, the same passions will overflow about some NEW issue.

Good post, KC.

I believe there's a good reason for us to stay, in fact, there are several.

Number one, we all obviously are Black people who think for ourselves and stand on (Biblical) principles, most of which the Conservative movement is based upon. That is the main reason I am no longer a Democrat.

Secondly, to those Whites that write on this thread who erroniously believe that ALL Blacks believe in the Cradle-To-Grave Government mentality, here's your Wake-Up Call: NOT!!!! I also don't believe you'd all appreciate being lumped in with the stereotypes that are usually associated with extremist bigots. So please knock it off, would you? It gets rather old after while.

Lastly, the voice(s) of the Black Conservative should NOT be silenced, nor should we run away-it's time to take a stand for a good cause.

Stop looking back and move forward.

-Regards, T.
