Fox News just reported that ABC reported that Nickles has called for a new Senate leadership challenge to Trent Lott!
So much irony in one exclamation point.
Okie dokie...
It was winnable. The conventional wisdom until the days just before the vote in the House was that the vote there would not win, either. History will reflect the arguments presented by the House Managers to have been the better argument and history will reflect the roadblocks thrown in their path.
Now, back to the topic at hand...
Now you are wanting the guy to have some sense.... LOL.. When he couldn't think fast enough to pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel. One minute he's dumb or incomptent and the next you want him to be logical and smart. He may fall for it but I don't know. Didn't Byrd sorta have the same thing happen to him and he took the Chairmanship of the Appropriations Committee after stepping down from SML. So maybe things happen that way but I don't see it in the cards. I see it happening more like Newt, Livingston, etc. Has it hurt either of them with their future endeavors... Granted their dallies weren't racist but still they have survived.
Well all this and the real answer is time will tell....
If they had both Chafee and McCain ready to bolt, they would have bolted, and Lott would have been left alone for now (so he'd remain the face of the Senate Repubicans come 2004). Similarily, if nobody was ready to bolt yet, they wouldn't risk getting a majority leader who is willing to lead and definitely wouldn't risk losing the issue that Lott's become.
I will make a left field prediction. It will be a back bencher from somewhere other than the south. The senate wants to move on. Doesn't matter if the candidate is squeaky clean, they just don't want this to become a "southern" issue.
Santorum anyone?
It was Trent Lott who played into the hands of the demagogues.
I know you know this, and I know you don't seem to mind, but for some reason I feel an impulse to repeat the truth, over and over.
Yes I did...I just picked that out because I felt it to be the most pertinent to this discussion.
Frist would hold the position while the party has a chance to straighten this mess out.
Marking time is awful strategy. We're the majority party, and it is time to consolidate that majority. We MUST take the initiative NOW.
The sole purpose is to give us some time.
We don't need time for waiting...that would only serve the Democrats. We own the government...it's time we did something with it, dammit!
He is the only one with enough political savy to run this gamit without losing Chafee or McCain and he's only going to be in the senate until the end of his current term.
Baloney. I could give you a long list of Frist's bone-headed errors of the last two years as head of the Senatorial Committee, if I thought it would serve any of us to do so. i would just as soon you didn't force me to delineate them right now for the sake of unity.
We e a mess on our hands, not just caused by Lott, but by the dems who now think they have a political advantage.
Another squish moderate who works against conservative interests in the Leader's job isn't going to make any of that go away...it will only exascerbate the problems.
...willpush Bush's agenda and do a fine job and then will leave the field open to Lott, McConnell, and Nichols to fight it out over the position once this firestorm has died down.
Firestorms never end in DC, they just shift around to new parts of the forest. Do the right thing for the long-term and things will work out just fine down the road.
Sure. Bring him on! :-)
That is Maxine Waters' fault how? Maybe Peggy Noonan should be to blame. She should have written a speech for Chester so she is to blame. It took Lott until Friday to utter those words, only when his back was up against the wall. Perhaps William F. Buckley ordered him to act stupid, and it's Bill's fault.
Oye Vey
Tom is a darn good senator but not a very good leader.
Power sharing lasted about 5 months while the senate was 50/50.... after that the Democrats were the majority and controlled with no power sharing as was the agreement. Not sure about how you get judges approved when you don't control the committees...
Tom.... who is Tom, that darn good senator?
