Fox News just reported that ABC reported that Nickles has called for a new Senate leadership challenge to Trent Lott!
BTW, I've already freely acknowledged that if Lott is forced all the way out of the Senate, Daschle will virtually-immediately become the illegitimate "majority" leader.
Great, he did not say he was for segregation, he said he wished his old friend had been elected President so I guess you agree with me then.
Some of the very same people who labeled Byrd a racist after his white niggar remark are defending Lott now. The only difference between the two is that one has a D after his name and the other an R. Ironically it's these very same people who are harping on the hypocrisy of the left.
No, the difference is Byrd actually SAID, 'white niggar' he wasn't thinking it, he SAID it. Can't you see the difference??
And this woud be Trent Lott's Edge? Maybe it has a lott to do with ethics and how far you are willing to go compromise to attract a coalition.
It would be nice in this age to see someone ascend to power without selling his soul, but sadly that may not be possible today.
Yeah, and the Titantic is unsinkable, right? ;-)
Seriously though, we MUST maximize our advantage in '04, (to waste that opportunity would be criminal) and work towards a true WORKING majority so we don't have to worry about the idiots like Jeffords or Chaffee or McCain anymore.
He explained on This Week today that that is what has happened in the past. Everyone that resigned also resigned their seat. He went on to explain that in this case he wasn't sure Lott would do this because MS Democratic Governor.
LOL, deport you have been here long enough to know that sooner or later everyone takes a turn being despised on this forum!
No, I've been saying from the first that a politically savy move would be to step down (along with a long, soul wrenching statement that says he's doing this for the good of the party, that although he's collegues know that he is not a racist, this sacrifice is necessary and that he knows that conservatives are held to an impossibly high standard, and he's going to use his time in the senate to prove to the country what the people of Mississippi already know....yada yada yada". Then he should take a very high profile position on a very important committee.
That will just KILL the race baiters because they will have accomplished nothing.
Frist is the ideal man to step in. He's only going to be in the senate another 2 years (the length of time for a ML) and then he wants to return to being a surgeon. There is no real worry about him wanting to stay on because if he stays away too long he will lose his skill and everyone knows that he loves being a physician far more than he likes being in the senate. Nichols will be content, McConnell will be content, and Lott has a chance to rehab his image and come back stronger and wiser than before. The ball is in their court, let the best man win.
Oh yeah, and pop some popcorn and pull up a chair because it'll really be fun watching the dems!!!!!
Want to put money on either or both halves on that? I'm sure that I can make it to Nevada so it would be all nice and legal.
As for a power-"sharing" agreement, there is no way that Lott will do anything else. Lincoln Chafee (or whoever the Democrats have lined up to leap) will leap by January 3 regardless of Lott's final status, and Lott is simply too damn weak to think of doing anything besides "share" power, especially with this hanging over his neck. Heck, the 'Rats are already demanding equal funding even though they only have 49 votes on paper.
As for McCain leaving, if he's truly interested in ensuring that President Bush is a one-term President (and I think he is), he cannot wait until 2004 to make his move. There is no way that he's going to unseat Bush on the Republican ticket, so that leaves either the 'Rats or a third party. If he's truly interested in occupying the Oval Office as opposed to simply making sure that Bush isn't there come January 21, 2005 (which I think is rather less likely), he has to become a 'Rat. That is going to take some serious "bona fides" creation, one that is going to take better than a year.
Even if he were simply satisfied with just knocking off Bush, he's going ot have to start really separating himself from the Republican Party. As I doubt that there is enough time to do the necessary filings only in 2004, that would strongly suggest that he would need to leave the Republican Party in 2003. Do remember that Bob Smith decided to try a similar route, and he did his bolt (and return) in 1999.
