Fox News just reported that ABC reported that Nickles has called for a new Senate leadership challenge to Trent Lott!

This is the best Friday I've had in a while. All in one day, the WH lost Matalin and Kissinger, but they can't seem to shake one albatross, no matter what they do.

Rumor is, that Lott blackmailed the WH, saying that if he was asked to resign his leadership, he would also resign his senate seat. Lott apparently came out swinging a 2 x 4 on that one.

Meanwhile, the WH is rumored to be blackmailing Lott in regards to a possible appointment of Rudman on the bipartisan commission to investigate 9/11. The message apparently is that the WH can distance itself from Lott just as easily as they can anyone else.

Wow. For a party in power of both houses, the presidency, and SCOTUS...republicans surely seem to be having a hard time of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but wouldn't Lott have to resign his senate seat for this to happen? If his fellow GOPers in the senate see it in the party's best interest to replace him as majority leader and he quits his seat as a result giving Senate control to the Dems, who will be to blame?

Well I ask you, how much loyalty would you feel for your own party if it falsely branded you a racist and shamed you in front of the whole country, then forced you from your post, hmmm?

Seems to be the flavor of the day, McGavin. They don't want to blame Lott for his own fecklessness, so they blame the President, instead. Maybe some here hold a few segregationist leanings themselves. President Bush rebuked Lott's comments and said the Republican Party does not reflect them. What the hell was he supposed to do? Sit there and say Go, Lott, Go?

The only other source I have seen here was Fox News article. And we don't know what their source was. Has Fox repeated the assertion since? Have you seen it elsewhere?

Apparently, Nickles hasn't put himself up for the position at all. If he does, we'll know he has the votes.

Regarding the President, I guess some will never be satisfied with him. God forbid he should ever compromise in order to get something done instead of getting nothing done. Staunch conservative 100% of the time? Perhaps not. But, effective leader? Absolutely.

So true. And that's exactly why he was able to accomplish so much in Texas, because he was able to work with both sides.

Mentioning Jeffords is a friend, in such an unusual circumstance, was weird, and pandering. That is Lott's nature, and it is why the right is not fully supporting him now. He shows too much weakness torwards the left.

Nope, just responding to an allegation about seeing the big picture.... And my point is that your allegation can apply to others including youself, just depends upon where you sit and view the arena. Look for a one term President if this continues and screws up his agenda. I think you'll see very little if anything accomplished now in the next two years..... so why stick around. He will pack it in at Crawford an enjoy life doing other things.

I think the price of keeping Senate control is too high. As others have said, dumping Lott is both the right thing to do and goes a long way toward furthering our efforts to thwart the race card.

Why do we need to lose the majority if he just steps down from the ML position? He should certainly NOT resign from his Senate seat.

Lott was in good standing with the Senate for years. He has proven himself to be a successful Senator.

Lott's ACU voting record is solid also.

He's got himself in a real bind here. The democrats claim to hate him in the hopes of driving him from the senate entirely and creating an issue from what would otherwise be a total vacuum on the rat side of the isle. They really have nothing left over there and this is the best they come up with on such short notice.

The conservatives are still pissed about impeachment and the moderates are running for cover because someone called him a racist. His voting record and strong talk on PBA notwithstanding Lott's suddenly got nowhere to go.

He's got no friends left.

I know he's not a racist, I think everyone does but they just don't care. It's all a political calculation at this point.

If this costs us the senate or taints our SC this is going to be the biggest GOP tragedy since Jeffords jumped.

They will have to change our label from "Stupid party" to "Sucicidal, guilt ridden, bipolar party"

That's my point but it doesn't matter anymore, perception becomes reality. It's being scattered by so called conservatives with the rumor mongering that is running rampant on this issue.....
