The buzz at Vice President Dick Cheney's Christmas reception last Tuesday was about remarks by Sen. Trent Lott, Mississippi Republican, at a 100th birthday celebration for Sen. Strom Thurmond, South Carolina Republican.

Mr. Lott said: "I want to say this about my state. When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either." Mr. Lott was referring to Mr. Thurmond's 1948 presidential candidacy as a "Dixiecrat," a party formed to promote segregation and forestall the nascent civil-rights movement. Mr. Lott limply apologized for his "poor choice of words." How about a poor choice of thinking?

Trent Lott might as well be a Democratic Party mole, placed among Republicans to cause his party severe political damage.

Mr. Lott is believed to lack a strong ideological foundation, preferring to perpetuate his own power and perks rather than advance a uniquely Republican agenda.

Used to be an old saying around here : Character Matters

A similar theme is raised by the National Review -- Check FR Post

*** [Lott] can only be a drag **** But it is possible for someone simultaneously to suffer unfair attacks, handle himself and his predicament poorly, and be an underwhelming political figure. Trent Lott has managed a trifecta ***

Wonder if that 'drag' comment was intended as I suspect it was? LOL LOL LOL ..... Oh, well, typical whispered D.C. rumors..... Lott is the ultimate embarassment. Trent Lott's Theme Song ought to be:

"I'm too stupid for my shirt ... Too stupid for my shirt .... I'm Stupid ..."

GWB must tell him to resign as Majority Leader.

In a way he is. Only, the Civil Rights Act relegated those Democrats to history.

I just posted a thread with my opinion that both the Torch and Bud Dwyer showed more honor than Lott has. It is time for Lott to take one for the team and step aside.

The thread was pulled. I guess being pro-Lott is now the "party line" on the Free Republic. Sad. Very sad.

Screw majority leader. This punk should resign from the senate. Rep. Chip Pickering would surely win in a special election.

It makes you wonder did he do it on purpose to get back at Dubya for making him pass Homeland Security?
