THE ATTEMPT TO UNDO AN ELECTION: I MAY BE RELUCTANTLY CHANGING MY MIND ON LOTT
dfu | 12-2002 | dfu

Posted on 12/14/2002 8:18:17 AM PST by doug from upland

I have wanted Trent Lott removed from leadership since Impeachment. The spineless weasel had the votes to bring live witnesses before the Senate on national television that would have revealed the extent of Bill Clinton's sexual predator history.

David Schippers called it a SELLOUT. Schippers was absolutely correct. Could the prosecutors have changed enough minds to get 67 votes? We will never know. They should have had the opportunity to try. Lott is the one who stood in the way.

The RATS have been in turmoil since the midterm elections. They were shocked to their core. And now, Lott puts his foot in his mouth to give them the opportunity for which they have waited.

The same people who were not concerned with rape, perjury, obstruction of justice, intimidation of witnesses, etc., are suddenly concerned that a weak-kneed GOP leader (who is their best friend) made a really stupid statement last week, made the same kind of statement 20 years ago, and didn't want his fraternity integrated 40 years ago. We know what the South was like 40 years ago. It appears that Lott has led his public life since those days as someone who believes in racial equality.

Now, he is being a whiner and threatening to quit the Senate if he is removed from leadership. What a weenie. We don't want him as leader, but we need him in the Senate. It is blackmail.

Perhaps the statements will blow over soon. He is certainly damaged goods, but the GOP may have no choice but to keep him. The RATS will benefit either way. If he stays in his position, he will continue to compromise and kiss their RAT posteriors. That is Trent.

The more ominous scenario is that the GOP does the right thing to force him out. Yes, I believe if he is forced out of leadership he will quit the Senate and a RAT governor will appoint a RAT to the Senate.

So here we have the reason for the assault. If Lott stays, the RATS have an issue to fire up their base and they have a weak Lott right where they want him. If Lott goes, the Senate is 50-49-1, with the 1 voting for their team.

But it won't stop there. I suspect that the RATS are confident that either Snow or Chaffee might then see an opportunity to jump. Either of them could become an Independent and vote with the RATS. All of the effort by the GOP to retake the Senate will be flushed down the toilet.

This really is an effort to undue an election. The RATS, not surprisingly, are even doing it in time of war while al-Qaeda plans another assault on our nation.

We may have little choice but to reluctantly support Lott. Let's see how it plays out through the Christmas season (not the "Holiday season"). If he survives for another week, he may ultimately keep his post.

The real conservatives of the party, and those who really know how to deal with RATS, better sit Lott down and tell him the facts of life. If he is to keep their support, he needs to throw down his pom-poms, get rid of his light loafers, and start acting like a man. We don't need a wimp when we are dealing with the RATS.

President Bush made some strong statements as he clearly needed to do. Now it is up to the rest of the party to start fighting back. It is time to be reciting the awful, hateful, racist comments said by the RATS. We really do have an opportunity to stick it in their faces if we have the gonads to do it. There is no White Caucus, but there is a racist Black Caucus. It is no time to sit on the sidelines and wave pom-poms. Or is it pom-pons?

For all you who are saying "Lott isn't a racist", I'll point out that unless you're Lott, you don't know.

We are, after all, talking about someone from an old South state, an admirer of Davis and the Confederacy, who supported segregation in his fraternity and college. He's plays with Bob Jones U., he's made similar statements in the past about Thurmond, and as a long term serving member of Congress, knew the history.

If he is mystified why people are pissed off, and why blacks have valid reasons to despise the Confederacy and its ideals, he has a problem.

Sometimes a duck is just a duck, walking and quacking.

There are two rough precedents for this. Newt and Bob Livingston both left completely when they caved in. Livingston is doing great ($$$) as a lobbyist and Trent Lott could do the same

I did not say that the RATS made him say anything. He alone is responsible for the stupidity. With their allies in the press, the Black Caucus, with the RAT leadership in the background, has a full court press going. I want Lott gone but not on their terms.

The only thing that is going to stop this is for President Bush to stand up and put a stop to it. He needs to say ENOUGH! This country is being divided by this issue at a time when the country needs, for it's own safety, to be united. He needs to put this thing in perspective and be done with it.

Lott can remain, but he should NOT be permitted in front of a camera, he should not be allowed to make any decisions or consessions without a full vote of the republican senators.

Well, sabretooth...
I am glad you posted an accurate quote.
It illustrates the difference between what he said and what the "progressives" self-servingly inferred.
That you should join them is a whole other issue.

I for one know that there are many other issues that the phrase "...we wouldn't have had all these problems..." would refer to.

Playing "stupid and ignorant" with inferences is a major Socialist-Progressive weapon.

Good point. The question for Lott is what he thinks he can do outside the Senate. If he thinks there is a cushy lobbying job waiting, he should think again. I think the administration could make clear that if Lott resigns the senate, any lobbying he does will insure the defeat of the bill he lobbies for. That he is poison. That any company he goes to work for will get audited by the IRS, etc.

Really? I hadn't heard that. Do you have a source?

After reading Sellout, I turned on Lott and do not understand why Nickles or Santorum hasn't challenged him. Lott's efforts to "conciliate" with the Dummycrats just weakens GWB, and I'm sick of Lott.

Thank you so much for posting that link! As I said, I am no big fan of Senator Lott but the charge of blackmail was simply piling on, in my opinion.

What you have stated is the SOLE REASON that all of this BS about "WHAT LOTT SAID" is bogus. Anytime anyone of our ELECTED OFFICIALS praise ANY of our founding fathers or more to the point, MAKES the EXACT same statement about any FOUNDING FATHER, that LOTT made about Thurmond, then they can legitimately be called rascit and asked to resign. This is what I mean by Politcal Correctness taken to the Twilight Zone of absurdity.

Please see the link to the article in the Washington Post in reply #79. Senator Lott did not blackmail the other Republicans. This is a rumor and is not true.

I don't want my President to be vindictive as to use the IRS in such a way on a stupid person such as Lott. That's just plain wrong.

Agreed that it was piling on. I think Lott's persecutors are overplaying their hand. Hopefully the public will react accordingly.

I am still suspicious of how that story was planted. I wonder who called CNN and CNBC with that information?

Teere would be NO SPECIAL ELECTION, the GOVERNOR of the state of Mississippi would appoint a new Senator for the remainder of Lott's term. The Gov is a gimmie.

I dunno..

Personally, I am hoping this will serve as a wakeup wall to Trenty that playing nice with wolves isn't to his benefit.

You can't reason with them, you can't expect civility or honesty or honor from them and you can't win them over to "your side".

So why bother trying?

Everybody in ConservativeLand (including Wesley Pruden, whose column today leaves something to be desired) needs to stop and take a chill pill. Lott isn't going anywhere. He's done his mea culpa and has probably turned the corner on this issue.

In the long run, he'll be okay, and so will we. The reason? The Senate Conservatives didn't openly call for his scalp. They waited. Smart guys. In so doing, they did Lott a service. Now, Lott will owe them a service in return.

He will have to hang tough on organizing the Senate. He will have to hang tough on judges. He will have to hang tough on Bush's economic package.

Folks; I strongly suspect that in the long run, because Lott has a leash on him now, we'll benefit. No more backroom deals with Daschle. Those times are gone.

Be Seeing You,

Chris
