In the earlier thread Mr. Edgerton is cited as believing that reconstruction and northern post war policies did the most damage to race relations in the south.

To a large extent I agree with that and wonder what it portends for the late state of Yugoslavia and those western states so eager to demonize one group in order to 'protect' another.

How different might we see each other today had the South been helped instead of occupied?

My most fervent hope is that they DO reach Texas and that Mr. Edgerton uses his visit to remind them that a whole bunch of non-european Mexicans fought against Santa Anna.

(Oh, and that several indian tribes and bands fought on both sides in the war of seccession/invasion.)
