The decision is made, so that's the way it will be. Lott will stay no matter how his detractors wee it. No doubt his popularity amongst the Black Caucus will suffer as a result. His suport will drop from zero to extra small zero. Or maybe not. Who knows, he might gain support if any of the Black Caucus become fully conscious.

I think it is highly likely Lott is doing this with White House approval, perhaps even at their suggestion or on their orders.
