CA: Coastal panel structure created political influence-peddling

The California Coastal Commission is a 12-member agency with virtually total control over land development proposals along the state's 1,000-mile-long coastline. It also has a unique structure that generates a high level of political influence-peddling in how money-laden coastal issues are resolved, sometimes to the level of outright corruption.

Last year, a Superior Court judge in Sacramento ruled that having 12 coastal commissioners appointed as they are violates the California Constitution's separation-of-powers provisions. The ruling, if upheld on appeal, should spark a fundamental overhaul of a very flawed, albeit very powerful, state agency.



A Republican Judge, I bet.

This panel stands in the way of off-shore drilling? And it's flawed? Ouch.
