I saw the original remarks that Lott made at Strom's B'day party on C-SPAN. I realized there and then that they were stupid even made in the context of the party.
It is undeniable that Lott is not the only senator or politician who has made questionable remarks. The point is that Lott's remarks were stupid. I think that the Pubbies could get a better leader than Lott.
Lott should go not because he's a racist. He should be replaced because he is stupid. We don't want a stupid person in a compromised position when we have an opportunity to make some progress.

Your 'stupid' label is right on the mark.
Leftist attacks on Lott basically boil down to: "It shows he's truly a racist."
Defenders of Lott basically say: "He's not racist. Yes, it was a stupid comment but you have to take in the context of a 100 year olds' birthday party, Thurmonds strong stance on defence, etc., etc."
This whole argument reminds me of an old joke I heard from my father when I was much younger, and I know that he heard it from someone else...
Little Johnny comes home with a terrible report card, and his father sits him down and delivers a stern rebuke for the horrendous grades. After listening calmly to his father's diatribe, little Johnny says: "Daddy, I've got one question for you. Is my bad performance due to heredity or environment?"
The point is that IT DOESN"T MATTER IF LOTT IS A RACIST OR IF HE'S STUPID. Either way, he must step down as leader because no one wants a stupid leader or a racist leader.
