IT IS TIME FOR LOTT TO GO !

By Glenn Reynolds

LOTT IS DAMAGED GOODS. Everybody knows it, except maybe him. If he serves as Majority Leader, the GOP will have to deal with TV commercials like this.

[Major screw up by Lott used by the Dims against Bush}

Many otherwise-likely Republican voters will stay home, or vote Libertarian, something that is already hurting the GOP.

And Lott's been a lousy Majority Leader anyway. Somebody needs to suck it up and have The Conversation with him. Not serving as the Majority Leader is hardly a fate worse than death.

UPDATE: The American Prowler and many other people say Lott's people know it, even if Lott doesn't.

Republican and Libertarian comments from Oliver Willis' web site:

COMMENTS

I am a through going conservative/libertarian/"card carrying" member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (tm)[Does my Bi Lo card count?], and the Republicans deserve this ad in 2004 if they do not remove Lott as Senate Majority Leader.

Andrew Foth/December 11, 2002 09:25 AM

I am a proud conservative. Lott's offense is unforgivable. He has to step down. I never liked Lott anyway because I thought him a weak leader. Now he's a racist pig to boot. If I were Bush, I'd dump Lott immediately.

Christopher Rice/December 11, 2002 09:31 AM

I'm actually starting to think we really could be rid of that butthead.

Kevin McGehee/December 11, 2002 09:35 AM

I'm a libertarian who sympathizes from time to time with parts of the Republican Party. If Lott doesn't step down, I will *never* vote Republican again.

DC/December 11, 2002 09:38 AM

And the worst thing about the ad is that it isn't even slightly unfair.

I have never liked Senator Lott. Frankly, he is too, too from the 'good old boy from the old school' and has trouble expressing himself ... and appears to be as 'dumb as a shoe' whenever he gets major face time on the national media shows. Have feeling that Sam, Cokie, Georgie Pooh love to subtly rip Lott apart .... and he simply is too dumb to realize he is being taken apart limb by limb.

Never liked Lott one bit, not a whoot, and I think most Americans think he looks a little strange. And he wears a bad hairpiece, at least it looks like he is wearing a bad hairpiece. And what is with all those strange stories out of D.C. whispering about his sex life?

Get rid of Lott! Now!

So you agree with the liberal pundits and political malcontents here on FreeRepublic that Senator Lott should go. Okay. While I believe a Bill Frist or Mitch McConnell would be better suited to be Majority Leader, I don't belive Lott should step down for the verbal error he made last week. It would be playing into the hands of the liberal establishment and that's something I could ever agree with.

When Robert Byrd (D-KKK) steps down from his position of leadership for the FLAT OUT use of the n-word in a Fox News interview last year, then I will agree that Lott should step down as ML. Not before!!

Did you know he's used the exact same line before? And no, I am not a malcontent. But there is no explaining this away, try as you might. Regards,

Many of us didn't care for Lott before this gaff.

Whether he stays or goes depends on many factors.

None of which will be because the blacks will suddenly be turned off by their Democrat slave masters and vote Republican!

Nothing from nothing.....well you know.

Just MHO

I don't know and it is really irrevent. All Lott has to do is step down as Majority Leader. Republicans can elect a really good man to fill Lott's shoes. There is something ominous and disconcerting about Tom Dashle coming forward to defend Lott. It is almost like saying, "We like him best, because he vulnerable to blackmail and we have lots and lots of ammunition to shoot at him. Keep Lott in place, so all of the DemonRATS can take their best shot."

On second thought, all the rumors coming out of D.C. may be RAT propaganda and vile innuendo. Consider the source.

I heard about the similiar remark Lott made back in 1980. So what! Btw, I'm not trying to explain away nothing, cause there is nothing to explain away. That's my point and that's what I believe. This is a non issue that has been blown out of proportion by the liberal establishment and latched onto by a few, so called conservatives. In my book, more malcontents, then conservatives. I already said, Frist and McConnell would be a better alternative to Lott, but this is no time to turn tail and run from a bunch of finger pointing liberal minorities and their liberal white enablers.

Nobody thinks Trent Lott is a hate-filled, cross-burning, closet KKK-er. The public image of Lott is of some old barbershop queen, offering up chit-chat about the football game and reminiscences about the good old days when the darkies knew their place in between applications of pomade and scalp massages. He's a disaster for the GOP, though, and God's gift to Hillary Clinton looking to the future. Triage Lott now!

Quenn Maxine put an end to this, with her acathing opinion of ant Democrat who would let this slide. Daschlle has jumped on the bandwagon since then.

Stepping down is the honorable thing to do. His remarks were more than "insensitive," they were reprehensible. It is better to do the right thing, regardless of what position the left takes.

Probably some truth in this.
It is still hard to explain some of Lott's actions as ML.
The main problem right now is perception, and the rats and the leftist press are really putting legs on this story.
It has put the Republican steamroller on hold and has to be dealt with quickly and decisively.

If the right eye offends thee pluck it out!

Yesterday, I was of the opinion that Lott could resign as ML,keep his seat and all would be well. Having had time to reflect on that scenario-I think that Lott's ego is so involved with being the ML,that he would probably resign his seat, if he couldn't be ML. And with a Dem Gov of Miss,we cannot lose that seat.Trent also benefits from Landrieu's victory on Sat .I have now had my fill of Jesse and Maxine and Gore and McAuliffe demanding that the Republicans ditch Lott. These same people embraced clinton, Condit and Kennedy. At this point,I don't care if we have Bozo the Clown as ML-as long as the WH is making his lips move. We have too many important issues coming up-federal judges,SCOTUS vacancies, a war,etc-to allow Daschle, Leahy, Hillary to retain control of the Senate.I would hope that the WH has had a "Come to Jesus" meeting with Trent and laid down the ground rules for his future conduct-if he wants to go to the bathroom,he had better check with the WH first. If Lott has any hopes of a future after the Senate,he better use this grace period to redeem himself. As much as Lott's conduct has infuriated me,I like you, will be apoplectic,if the likes of Maxine Waters and Sheila Jackson Lee attempt to overturn the results of the Nov 5 elections. Having the moral high ground is nice, but it doesn't get conservative judges to the USSC and the federal bench, taxes rolled back, etc, etc. We need to be pragmatic and not lose sight of the big picture.

Still ... No one has commented as yet on that vile and offensive anti-Bush video ad that was linked above. Guess most Freepers have made up their minds about Lott already.

If the right eye offends thee pluck it out

I hear you.

You are absolutely correct.

It goes to the premise that two wrongs don't make it right.
I don't know how this will play out, but there is an old saw that says "if you go into something right you will come out all right"
