December 5, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data carrier Covad Communicaitons (Covad.com) announced on Thursday that it is offering a discount of up to 22 percent for broadband services and software grants to law enforcement and support agencies using the Child Alert Foundation (CAF) system.

The CAF implements the AMBER Alert, the system used to notify citizens of abductions that law enforcement believes could result in serious harm or death.

Covad says the Child Alert Foundation is a non-profit charity that provides Internet software to help police, 911, and other law enforcement agencies communicate and notify the public of abductions. The networking of law enforcement organizations, as well as radio, television and other organizations, allows abduction information to be disseminated quickly to the general public.

"It has been proven that the AMBER Alert saves lives," says Charlie Hoffman, Covad CEO and president. "Fast dissemination of information is critical for the alert to be successful, and a broadband network connection can help speed the communication process. Broadband is essentially helping to change the way that we communicate, and we are proud to offer these organizations a discount on a tool that could help save a life."

Covad says the discounts will range from 11 to 22 percent for broadband services, including DSL and T1 products. Covad will pay $250 for the required software in the case of existing Covad customers that are new to the CAF system.
