BEIJING (AP) -- Fed-up with menus offering delicacies such as "fried pawns" and "bean eurd," Beijing is declaring war against incomprehensible and misspelled English-language signs and notices, the state-run China Daily reported Friday.
"There are many 'Chinglish' words on road signs, public notices, menus and signs describing scenic spots, which often puzzle foreigners," Xiong Yumei, vice director of the Beijing Tourism Bureau, was quoted as saying.

Had a friend that visited China. Came back throughly disgusted. Said it was the filthiest place he had ever been.
Makes me wonder if "Pee Park" isn't right?

Yeah, if they want more tourists they should clean up their streets first. Then their spelling.

While this is not in China, it is a great sign.

Had a friend that visited China. Came back throughly disgusted. Said it was the filthiest place he had ever been. When and where....The entire range of sanitation is available. Nice motels in major cities are up to Western standards.
Now there is this outhouse on the border of Mongolia with room for 10 squatters that has a pile of, uh , material about 15 feet high ...roasting in the Gobi sun....In addition to the ghastly stench, rural chinese are very curious about Western anatomy and have no concept of privacy...Its a ok to watch someone do their business point blank and make comments to your friends....
Not my most dignified moment.

Would have been about 9 years ago. I'm not sure what part he visited.
It's not fair to judge the whole country by one man's opinion. The guy was a little more of a stickler than average for things being just right.
The thing that grossed him out the most was apparently some of the restaurants served food in bowls without washing them between patrons. Said he ended up eating at McDonalds practically the whole 3 months.

China? Filthy?
I was there in 1995. Kunming, Shanghai, Beijing. Far from spotless, and the air was pretty dirty. But filthy? No way. I found the Chinese rather neat and orderly. Awful friendly too. Some of them liked to rub my skin, to see if the black would come off. No offense meant or taken; these were older folks who'd never seen a living, breathing black guy before. It was a hoot!
I hate China's government, but I love China.

I lived in China for 2 years. It is getting better, however, pollution is so bad I can't even see the sun in the morning due to all the haze. Water is extremly polluted as well.

LOL Good one. Sound as if the Chinese have been using Babblefish for translations :)

Yeah, the streets are very clean. The air and water is the problem.
