KUWAIT (Reuters) - A drunken man wielding a ceremonial sword stormed up to the gates of the U.S. embassy in Kuwait and shouted abuse before being restrained by guards and arrested, an embassy spokesman said on Wednesday.
The spokesman said the unidentified man drove up to the embassy on Tuesday morning and began waving the sword before flinging it on the ground, at which point it broke.
"He was very drunk, that much was clear," the spokesman said.
"He drove up and got out waving a ceremonial sword. He was yelling stuff at the guards, but they couldn't really hear what he was saying. He threw the sword on the ground and the handle broke off."
The spokesman said the incident was not regarded as a serious threat. Kuwaiti police arrested the man. It was not immediately clear if he was a Kuwaiti or a foreigner living in the oil-rich Gulf Arab state.
There are concerns that anti-U.S. sentiment is on the rise in Kuwait, long a main regional ally of Washington and a likely main launching pad for any U.S. invasion of Iraq.
But although many Kuwaitis remain grateful to U.S.-led forces for ending the Iraqi occupation of the country in the 1991 Gulf War, Kuwaiti analysts say a growing section of society is opposed to U.S. foreign policy in the region.
In October, two Kuwaitis attacked U.S. Marines training on a Kuwaiti island, killing one and wounding another. Last month, a Kuwaiti policeman shot and seriously wounded two U.S. soldiers after stopping them on a highway south of Kuwait City.
Such quality in Kuwaiti steel! Or was it an Iraqi leftover? :)
Nor would Selim the Sot.
