On Sunday morning at approximately 8 am, an individual slammed his Toyota loaded with TNT, mortars and several missiles, into the reception building after crossing the first checkpoint to the new airport in the Sara Bagh area, several kilometres away from Khost City.
The explosion created a scene from hell and devastated the area which is critical for the US military.
As a result, the driver of the vehicle was martyred and 14 Americans who were present at the main gate, reception building and command and control centre were killed.
The mortars and missiles loaded in the car kept on exploding for quite a few minutes. This powerful attack created chaos at the Khost airport and its surrounding areas with fire and steel said to be erupting everywhere.
Of the attacks on Americans in the Southern part of Afghanistan, this one was definitely one of the most powerful of its kind so far. According to Daily Islam’s reporter who was present on the scene, looking at the vehicle used in this attack, it was obvious that the Americans had suffered a signifigant loss. Americans forces seized the whole area and blocked all roads ubtil Sunday night and no one was allowed in or out of the area.
Witnesses differed in their accounts with some saying the driver of the vehicle appeared to an Arab while others believed the explosion to be remote controlled. But according to reliable sources, Afghan soldiers are on duty on the first gate while the second is controlled by the Americans. Consequently, it is near impossible for a foreigner in a suspicious vehicle to pass the first gate where individuals and vehicles are checked with high tech security equipment.
The conditions and nature of the attack indicate that the driver was an Afghan who rammed his new four wheel drive into the Americans’ reception area which of course would have killed him. If this is true, it would be a first sacrifice attack by any Afghan. IG Khost Police, while giving an interview to Radio Tehran called the event “an intense one” and went on to say that “this is the work of those who want to see the current Afghan government and system fail”.
