Put the cow on trial, and let the chips fall where they may.

I know what you mean about cows murdering cars in South America. Once I was riding in a hired car out of Georgetown, Guyana to the border with Suriname. The driver drove way too fast. When I told him to slow down he went faster (no woman was going to tell him what to do apparently). There were cows, dogs, people, etc. all over the place including on the road. The moron finally hit a cow. The poor creature hit the windshield and injured his hip. We were not injured, but I was covered with broken glass, blood and cow hair.

If that wasn't bad enough, the law was such that he had to spend the next two hours chasing the cow so he could lasso it. He then had to find someone who would walk the cow to the next village. We had to meet them in the village so my driver could attempt to get restitution from the cow's owner for the damage to his car. What a mess! It was not a fun day.

You're as crazy as a South American cow, a lone woman wandering around Guyana in a hired car. What a great story! I take it the driver knew the routine?

They are marvelously insane people down there. My worst taxicab incident came in Argentina. A mile from the airport the tire blew. Being a good Argentine, he told me everything's fine... stay tight. After 20 minutes of watching him try to flag down another cab rather than trying to fix his tire, I got out of the car and demanded my bags from the trunk. He refused. Two hours later, he gave me my bags. I had to walk back to the airport to get another car.

Another time in Asuncion, I was driving my partner's convertible that had FLA plates. Two cops on a moped stopped me and demanded registration and all that. The plates were expired, there was no registration, and I had no local license. That's never a problem down there. But these guys wouldn't take no for an answer. They harangued me for a while, until I finally gave in and pulled out my wallet. With the cop leaning over the car to get a good look, I opened it up and all there was was a single hundred dollar bill. I gave one of those "I'm sorry looks," at which point he reached over, grabbed the bill like a French waiter, and said, "Gracias, Senor." Then he stood up straight and saluted me like I was Franco himself.

He climbed back onto the back of the moped and away they went with my hundred bucks. That was like two month's salary -- for both of them. We figured they spent it in one night, and probably showed up for work a week later...
