The two candidates for the 5th Congressional District discussed negative campaign ads, tax hikes and whether the candidates had paid their taxes in a televised debate Tuesday night.
"In the runoff, we were committed to clean ads," Fletcher said. "My opponent broke his word (not to run a negative campaign)."

The Republican candidates polled nearly 2/3 of the total votes cast in this previously Democrat stronghold in the Nov. 5 primary. One of the losing candidates, former Rep. Clyde Holloway, R-LA, says he is sitting out the congressional race though he is voting for Suzanne Terrell for the Senate. Holloway says that the Republican nominee, Lee Fletcher, was deceitful in earlier campaign practices. Therefore, Democrat Rodney Alexander hopes to consolidate rural voters behind his standard.
