I can't stand the guy. Had he not run, Pataki would have shut down the Democratic Party for a long time to come.

You have it backwards. Had Golisano done better, the Demiocrats would have been relegated to Third Party Status, next ot the Conservatives Greens and WFP.
Better yet, their old allies, the Liberal Party just died.

Did he even have a message? It's doubtful he truly believed he could win so what was the point? Why blow all that money just to run for office?
If he was going to blow $74 million just for the hell of it, and gain some notoriety in the process, he'd have made more sense trying out for "The Bachelor". At least then he could spend his day ogling a bunch of clueless golddiggers in a hot tub instead of shaking hands with folks at the Plattsburg Elks Club.
