Some of you guys are here just to disrupt, which I really don't understand,

that's not the case. The problem is that getting you guys to provide the info that you claim you have to defend Maher is like pulling teeth. Take a look at BKauthor, he makes all these assertions, and then ignores the questions asking him to back them up. The natural assumption is that you guys all have an emotional attachment to this case, and that you don't really have the info that you claim you have.

That is in court, that is not for a deposition or a confession. Plus, neither of us know whether the reporter also had recorder in court that you just didn't see.

Actually, it was for depositions, as well as questioning of suspects that may have led to confessions. There was no tape, so as not to reveal the identities of grand jurors who asked questions.

Thanks for the link. However, according to the article:

"Westbay, now 49, has been free on bond since shortly after the shooting and says Edmonds killed himself."

So Westbay has been free on bond for the past 17-1/2 years, not held in prison for years until the trial as Maher was.

Interesting case (the Westbay case, I mean) his being forced to have an almost 18-year murder charge held over his head all these years, due to a lack of evidence on the part of law enforcement, which has apparently decided that he's guilty regardless of a lack of evidence, is similar to what seems to have happened to Maher.

As I read it, it showed that pretrial delays are not so uncommon, and occur in this country as well - contrasting with your prior statement.

Looks like he could get paroled in three months....

court tv

We are not dissatisified. I'd say this is a victory. If you got a guy who is eligible for parole in three months when two people died, that's a victory," Michael Griffith of New York, who has been advising Maher's lawyers, told Courttv.com by phone from Monaco. Griffith said the jury deliberated for less than two hours before issuing its finding. He said Maher's wife, Heidi Maher, cried when the verdict was announced. The defendant was whisked from the courtroom quickly, Griffith said. "When I heard 10 years, I gulped," he said. "But then when I heard his eligibility for parole would be within three months, I was shocked. By the time the appeals over, this guy could conceivably be paroled."

And nic, I would argue that the shorter sentence and the possibility of parole in a quarter, adds credence to the fact that Mr. Maher did infact speak truthfully when he was on the stand.

If there was a big cover up, they would of locked him away forever.

Of course pretrial delays are common in this country. I never said they weren't. What I pointed out was that Maher was held in prison for three years pending trial, but that Westbay (guilty or innocent, and I'm leaning toward the idea that Edmonds dropped the shotgun and accidentally shot himself) was out on bond those three years.

There is a big difference between being held in foreign prison for three years pending trial, and being released on bond in this country...even for an incredible 17 1/2 years (THAT is amazing...there is NO way normal pre-trial delays can account for it) pending trial.

no video or audio? besides you are mixing two things: a defendant confessing, and witness that needs to be protected. those are not in the same category.

Here is my basis, for the last 6 years, every depo I have gone to they record, digitally, oro on tape. In the last 3 years, they have provided a digital recording on CD-ROM, the depo having been recorded on an audio digital tape recorder.

Every confession that is admitted to trial has either been recorded in audio or video.

I have raised substantive points, such as proximity of the confession to the event (the closer the confession, the more reliable), etc.

rant about a thread being a waste of time, yet take the time to post on it. Absolute morons.

The onus is on the person who creates the original post. How do you feel when a radio or TV newscaster updates an obscure story with none of the background?

Further, suppose the newscaster came on later and said: "some people didn't understand what I was talking about earlier. They must be morons."

You wouldn't be in the Canadian government, would you?

Who really knows the truth about Mr. Maher?

My sympathy goes out to his wife (who often lurks here) and family, though.

I do hope he's paroled. He's been waiting for a trial for three years....three long years, just for a trial. I would like to know more information concerning all the circumstances surrounding this affair....not just what Monaco has wanted to release. And I'm not saying they've lied about everything, but it really has been a one-sided information type of thing.....and no press here about it, really. I think that's a bit odd, too.

That is, of course, a logical conclusion. We shall see what really does happen, though......if he really is paroled (or lives to get out of prison).....

Yes, you have. And they are worthy of note. However, all of your friends here are doing nothing to help Mr. Mahers cause.

Naw, as soon as he's finished doing his time, they'll stick him on a plane & deport him. He's coming back to the U. S. of A.

Hide the matches.

Thanks Landru & to all the other many supporters!
I believe that given the circumstances, today was a good day.
As far as the truth, not sure it'll ever come out & not sure I really want it to..
& to the cruel people that have visiTed this site; guess it's time for you to move on to another family to harass.

Anyone find this statement odd? Why wouldn't he want the truth to come out?
