The broad-based antitrust fight against Microsoft Corp. dwindled Friday to Massachusetts versus the software giant, as seven other states announced they would accept the landmark settlement reached by the company and the Bush administration.

Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly, one of Microsoft's most outspoken critics, on Friday asked a U.S. appeals court to reconsider tougher sanctions against the software company than those in the settlement. The appeals court has twice sided against the government on important antitrust issues in recent years, even as it agreed that Microsoft had illegally maintained its monopoly on Windows software.

Message to the Attorney General of Massachusetts: How much to end this idiocy? Let's make a deal. Do we smell political ambitions? "Senator" Reilly when Teddy's liver finally explodes? Something like that.

For those who are unfamiliar with the MA Attorney General, he is the same person who single-handedly enacted the strictest handgun control measures in the country (under the guise of "Consumer Protection").

But almost all the web developers I know are thrilled with the settlement, it actually went farther than it had to. MS can no longer use force, coercion, fraud and other illegal means to restrict our access to the free market. Capitalism will now take care of MS, mark my words.

I love how the standard media spin is once again 180 degrees opposed from reality. Then again, that's why MS spends so much on it's PR department. In the modern controlled news industry "everything is a win for Microsoft".

It's too bad, tho, in the 'old' days, back when FR was a 'conservative' site and not a 'R party' site, FReepers were the best on the planet at seeing thru this kind of media spin.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter to anybody but the Massachusetts taxpayer. Mass is going to lose this appeal.
