Women, naturalised citizens used for spying on US: Report

WASHINGTON: Foreign governments are increasingly using women and naturalised American citizens to spy on the United States with globalisation and information technology making it difficult to stop employees from stealing state secrets, according to a report on Wednesday here.

"It does point to a kind of confluence of factors -- the increase in the number of naturalised citizens, people who have foreign attachments and people who cite divided loyalty as a motive. These are all signs that the globalisation we see going on is also happening in espionage," said Katherine Herbig, author of the report issued by Defence Personnel Security Research Center.

About 20 Americans have committed espionage against their country to tried to spy since 1990. The globalisation of economics and the information technology revolution have made it difficult to stop government employees from giving away or selling secrets, the report by Monterey, California based government think tank said.

Herbig, in an interview to The Washington Times said: "Recent American spies have been older, more likely to be women, and more likely to be civilian" than in the past.

"They are also more likely to be from an ethnic minority,"she added.

The report states that naturalised American spies with "foreign attachments" -- relatives abroad, emotional ties to foreign nations or overseas business ties -- are more easily recruited by foreign intelligence services than those with no foreign ties.

Among the nations identified as "recipient countries" for the information collected by the spies are the Soviet Union and Russia (with a total of 114 out of 150 espionage cases involving Moscow or its Soviet bloc allies since 1947), China, Cuba, the Philippines, Egypt, South Africa, Poland, (former) East Germany, North Korea, France, Hungary, Czechoslovakia (now divided), Libya, Ecuador, Japan, Vietnam, Liberia, South Korea, Greece, Britain, the Netherlands, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, El Salvador, Jordan, Iraq and Taiwan.

Somehow someone will think this is a reason for releasing the traitor Jonathan Pollard.

Another reason for a forced pause in immigration.

I am sure this comes as a shock. /sarcasm Are they suggesting that women and naturalized American citizen used to be considered more trustworthy then male native born American citizens?

They are also paying natural born American citizen to spy on the US. I wonder if that comes as news to them as well. Am I expecting too much or are reporters getting dumber?

Herbig, in an interview to The Washington Times said: "Recent American spies have been older, more likely to be women, and more likely to be civilian" than in the past.

Now I just wonder if that might be because there are now more older/ female/ civilian /ethnic minority employees in high level sensitive positions? After all, if there are mostly white males in sensitive positions then logically you recruit young white male spies. As the work place becomes more mixed so does the kind of spies you can recruit.

And somehow, in the long list of countries, someone like Rodney King willl pick out only Israel.

The first and only thought, right Rodney?

I personally think that Pollard should rot in hell, but you should go and take a long look in the mirror.

I didn't pick on Israel, nor have I picked on Israel. I have nothing to look in the mirror about, as I am supporter of Israel. So stick it where the sun don't shine.

I am glad I only misunderstood you. You've got to admit, however, that, given the way you expressed yourself it was easy to do. Why did you single out Israel in that sentence? What was the point? I am just curious.

I poke fun at a lot of different people on FR. Those who support criminals like the Christines on flimsy evidence, those who believe in contrails, and those whose sole goal in life is to free the traitor Jonathan Pollard.

I understand why you would have taken it the way you did.
