Formal degrees often mean less than squat in a technical field. Forex, for the same job I did in the Navy, civilian companies want at least a Bachelor's degree, preferably a Master's. If the guy is a typical S&M -- consenting adults only, using proper controls -- it's none of my business, and my concern is, does he know his stuff, and will he do the job?

The way I meant it is that a person with many years of actual experience and no degree frequently -- even usually -- knows significantly more about how things work than someone with a degree and no experience.

And in case you didn't pick it up from my previous post, I know very well that your view is the one shared by government institutions (which I count as "civilian" because their employees wear civvies, not uniforms.) That both corporations and government share that view makes it no less short-sighted and elitist.
