UN officials defended hiring the kinky co-founder of an S&M group as an Iraqi weapons inspector - saying his personal life is his own business.

Harvey John (Jack) McGeorge also lacks a specialized university degree - although he was once honored with a "doctor of S&M arts and letters" from "Leather University."

McGeorge, who comes from Woodbridge, Va., is in New York waiting to be sent to Iraq as a munitions analyst.

"He is someone who has expertise in warheads and munitions, and that's what's important," said Ewen Buchanan, spokesman for the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission. "Nobody's suggested that he's done anything illegal, have they? The UN doesn't check into people's personal lives."

McGeorge's bizarre background was exposed in yesterday's Washington Post, which found the information by searching various Web sites.

McGeorge, 53, is a former Secret Service agent and the president of the Virginia security firm Public Safety Group. He has appeared many times on TV as an explosives expert, analyzing the Cole, Oklahoma City and Africa embassy bombings.

He's also the founder of Black Rose, a Washington-area "pansexual" S&M club, where he helped produce a guide for "Dungeon Monitors" for the group's Web site.

As the former chairman of the board of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, he worked to safeguard the rights of the "SM-leather-fetish, swing and polyamory communities," according to the Web site.

And as a member of the "faculty" of a three-day "Leather University" conference in Florida, McGeorge taught the basics of rope bondage and more. Other classes included "Bloodsports 101," "Flagellation 201" and "Pervitibles 101."

McGeorge could not be reached for comment, but he told The Post: "I am who I am. I am not ashamed of who I am - not one bit."

Still, he said he'd offer to resign, saying he didn't want to damage the UN.

Has anyone seen his analyses of those bombings? Does anyone know anything about his security firm -- what sort of job they do, how well they do it?

If the guy knows his stuff, who cares what he does in private? Except whoever it was who told the media about it. Perhaps that someone wants a person who knows *less* to take over that position? Perhaps that someone wants to embarrass, derail, or delay the entire inspection process? Or, considering the stress placed on his lack of a formal degree, perhaps that someone is angling for McGeorge's replacement to be a person with formal credentials (but perhaps less practical knowledge), which appointment would be advantageous to that someone.

His curriculum vitae, which can be acessed through Google, is unimpressive. He attended various course as the EOD school (bomb disposal) at Indian Head, Maryland. At one time they also gave the Special Weapons Disposal training at that site, which is where McGeorge likely comes in.
