Already today we've had at least nine more shakes. The swarm goes on.

Are major earthquakes often preceded by "swarms" of smaller earthquakes?
To: EggsAckley
You call those earthquakes? Puh-lease.
We went for a few weeks with virtually nothing, after the middling Gilroy quake, so this flurry is not at all surprising. I'm just disappointed I'm out in Massachusetts for Thanksgiving. Living in California for four years, I only felt two minor quakes.

As I understand it, the swarms release the pressure more gradually, thus rather than presaging a large quake, they work to dissipate the energy that would otherwise be suddenly released in a large quake.
That's not to say that there won't be a large quake, of course, but I'd rather have a swarm of tiny quakes like these than nothing at all for weeks on end.

You call those earthquakes? Puh-lease. No, I don't call them earthquakes. The USGS calls them earthquakes. Earthquake swarms are not uncommon; I remember one on April 18, 1990, on the anniversary of the SF quake. And as for feeling them, buddy, I'm SITTING on the Zayante fault line, and yes indeed I felt those quakes. (The biggest was 5.7)

Hell, maybe they will get a 9.0 so we can get rid of the Lefto-Pinky-Socialist Wacko's of the West Coast once and for all.

". I'm just disappointed I'm out in Massachusetts for Thanksgiving. Being dead is much more "disappointing" than being in Massachusetts, although it might come in second.

Well, maybe the reason you are in Massachusetts right now is so you can stay ignorant about what they feel like. I lived in California for 40 yrs and was fortunate not to have felt quakes all the time, but I do remember the one that took my mom's home off the foundation and nearly sent my chimney into the neighbor's house. I was driving at the time and didn't feel a thing. And then there are all those little ones that shake the foundation of homes, create cracks in the driveways and sidewalks, loosen up the structural integrity of houses over time, cause cupboard doors to get stuck, etc, etc, etc......and yes, they are called earthquakes. Good name for something that quakes the earth! LOL.... :)

or maybe a meteor will crash into your house and get rid of an ignorant jackass. LOL

Yes, but you have to admit that a rolling four-pointer is a lot more fun and less deadly than a tornado or a blizzard, the latter of which we seem to be getting right now out here.

Maybe God's getting back at Hollywood and San Francisco! (smile)

Many years ago, in one on Alistair Maclean's novels, the suggestion is made to start buying up land ion the Nevada desert, becuase, no doubt, one day AFTER the BIG QUAKE, it will be oceanfront property....

And of course kill all of the good people out there at the same time, right? Not to mention wiping out JimRob and destroying FR in the process...Get a grip.

Having survived both a tornado as a teen and the Northridge quake from within 2 miles of the epicenter, I can tell you that I would much rather deal with an earthquake than a tornado.

If California does slide into the ocean, do you think there will be a class-action suit demanding reparations for the loss of Aztlan?
