For decades homosexual was regarded as a non-discriminatory alternative to words like queer, fairy and poof. Rump ranger, weenie wagon, and turd miner are completely out of the question.

We had a columnist for the Evening Standard who wrote a series of columns in the style of Bill Clinton's Mum. The series was called "That's Mah Bill". Anyway, when the whole "gays in the military" thing came up, Britain was introduced by this column to the term "fudge packers". ;)
