I get about 5 minutes into the effects this entire thing's gravity would have on the physical universe in the immediate vicinity, and came to the same conclusion as you.

It would be impossible for something like this to go entirely unobserved by the thousands of eyes attached to the thousands of mouths you mention. No way they can *all* be "bought off".

Furthermore, there is no evidence that such an event has already taken place. The existing terrain on the planet, messed up as it is by earthquakes and volcanoes, is peanuts compared to the destruction that would be caused by the mutual attraction of two entire planets winging by so closely.

We'd be lucky to have something resembling a sphere.

These people are seriously conflicted.
