NEW YORK (AP) - A judge has ruled that the League of Arab States does not have to pay for $243,000 in security improvements that its landlord provided after the terrorist attacks. The 22-nation organization did nothing to cause an increased threat to the building where its offices are located or to other tenants, state Supreme Court Justice Barbara Kapnick said in a recent ruling.
The league, which has permanent observer status at the United Nations and has diplomatic immunity, said that shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks it told the landlord, 4 Third Avenue Leasehold, it had received bomb and death threats.
The landlord's lawyer, Nativ Winiarsky, said the company installed an elevator for the league's exclusive use and more security cameras, and posted guards.
The league refused to pay for the work and sued in December after the landlord threatened to evict it for allegedly violating a pass-along clause in its lease.
OK, then. What will the League do if the landlord disables the special elevator, and fires the guards?
