The capacity for speech is one of the key traits that seperates humans from other animals. Yet nothing divides people like language.

America has traditionally been a melting pot, where immigrants from all over the world learn English within a generation and assimilate into our alloyed culture. Spanish language broadcasting strikes me as an impediment to the traditional process of assimilation. As Jorge Ramos said above, "There are entire days in which I do not have to pronounce a single word in English." In some areas of California, Spanish language radio stations are approaching 50%. We are witnessing the emergence of a seperate culture of new Spanish-speaking immigrants within our own.

Since the airwaves are defined by federal law as being a "public resource," broadcast licenses have ostensibly been granted on the basis of serving the public interests. Therefore, it seems appropriate to ask the following question:

Is widespread and growing Spanish-language broadcasting, which impedes assimilation of new immigrants, in the best public interest of the American People?
