In the old days, when the Soviets used to fly their spy planes along the Eastern seaboard, we used to send out fighters to chase them away. The only difference with the current situation is that there were clear rules of engagement with the Soviets, because we did not want a silly incidence to get blown into WWIII.

After last year, I would have thought that US and China would have sat down and made clear of the rules of engagement. The fact that this incidence did not make it into mainstream news showed that this was not a big deal, or both sides did not want to make a big deal out of it.

Right! Unlike some who seem a bit too ready to start a war around here. As you stated this went on with the Soviets all the time. I can imagine there has been a lot of incidents that were never made public between us and the Russians and the Chinese. We all play cat and mouse and both sides understand the rules of the game. When the game gets too rough Thankfully cooler heads prevail at the top.
