Bean is an outspoken opponent of abortion rights, gay rights, and gun control. She is the granddaughter of Leon Leonwood Bean, who started the L. L. Bean mail-order house in Freeport, Maine. She lost a 1992 bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Tom Andrews (D-Maine), although she spent $1 million of her personal fortune trying (Chicago Tribune, 11/5/92). She serves on the board of L. L. Bean, which now grosses more than $600 million a year. Folkers is Bean's husband.
