Domestic cats are intelligent, affectionate, yet loftily independent pets. If abandoned by their owners, however, they become cunning scavengers and wily predators. They reproduce rapidly and form colonies that can present health and environmental problems. Military commanders and DoD officials are trying to deal humanely with cat overpopulation and are finding allies on and off base willing to help

If they are truly feral cats, then I would suggest a night-time special ops excercise. Night vision headgear and silencers (so nobody hears). A couple of sweeps through the place should be enough to bring the population under control for a while.

And lest someone think I'm just being cruel to cats, let me say that I have two of the most wonderful cats you could ever want, so I am definately a "cat person". The problem with feral cats is that they are dangerous and you can never really domesticate them if you capture them. It's not an inhumane act if you do it quickly and cleanly. Sad, because people have let them breed out of control, but not inhumane.

I hope Peter J. Egan has the necessary skill and the time to travel to all the air bases around the United States and humanely repair FOD'd jet engines.

At Vandenberg ABF (formally Camp Cook), there was and is a severe rattlesnake problem. Many years ago, the Army released a number of pigs. Apparently, pigs will eat snakes. Nowadays, Vandenberg is still rattlesnake central, but there is some excellent feral pig hunting, Base Commander permitting.

Yeah, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard announced it was going to quit caring for feral cats. The annoucement created a hubbub of protests. I looked for the local paper's story , it didn't show up in an archive search. I did find this though.

NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD INSTITUTES TRAP/NEUTER/RETURN POLICY FOR ITS FERAL CATS

This sort of thing makes me sick at heart. The cats are the problem at the present but the initial problem was irresponsible pet owners. They don't spay/neuter their cats and end up with unwanted kittens, or they move and leave their cat behind, or they dump their unwanted cats off somewhere to find a new home. I know the last to be true...I have 37 of the critters to testify to that!! They all get spayed/neutered as soon as they show up on our doorstep (or as soon as they're old enough) and get their shots.

Mine are the lucky ones. The cats at the bases are the ones who suffer now because of people's irresponsibilty. They do become a problem, though, and how to deal with them is always a tough call. I wouldn't want to be the one who has to make those decisions.

And NO, they can't trap 'em and send them here!! My hands (and lap) are full enough already! LOL!!!

I hate cats! Kill them all or trap them and take them to the country for coyote food. Coyotes have to eat too.
