So how do these rankings translate into actual numbers of books sold? I'd like to know how many were printed and how many were actually sold.

I don't know, but hard covers are expensive, and I bet when you get much below #400 on the list you aren't talking about more than a few thousand copies. Look for both books soon at Half-Price Books.
