As of this writing the U.S. intelligence community has determined that the alleged bin Laden audiotape of last week is authentic. Bin Laden is alive, probably hiding in the remote mountains of northeastern Afghanistan. As recent terrorist actions in Bali, the Persian Gulf and Jordan demonstrate, the war against al Qaeda has not been won. The state of alert across the world is the highest it has been since Sept. 11, 2001. Police reinforcements have been brought into London, German officials have warned that biological and chemical attacks are being planned, and the head of Interpol says that al Qaeda is preparing simultaneous attacks in a number of countries. Germanys Hans-Josef Beth, head of an international anti-terrorism unit, stated: Something big is in the air. German intelligence chief August Hanning said, We have to count on a new attack, an attack of a much larger dimension. Last Wednesday the FBI issued a confidential alert to 18,000 law enforcement agencies and police departments, though the U.S. threat warning remains at Code Yellow.
As the crisis between the U.S. and Iraq builds, al Qaeda prepares to act. Is this a matter of coincidence? According to at least one terrorism expert, Iraq and al Qaeda are working together.
