I'm "out there" and never heard of Bush sending his people here, to split the party.

I did notice a weak, incompetent campaign, run by Simon.

I also live in Cal, and I agree with your assessment. Simon lost because he was a poor candidate who ran a bad campaign. Being a political neophyte didn't help him.
