A sailor about to ship out, asked his best friend to take care of his cat. A month later he gets a letter from his friend saying, "I'm sorry but your cat fell off the roof and died".

The sailor was upset and wrote his friend a letter chastening him for not breaking it to him easier. He wrote, "You didn't have to break the news to me all at once like that, you could have written and said, "Your cat is on the roof", then a few days later, you could have written another letter saying, "Your cat fell off the roof", then in a few days you could have sent me another letter saying "the cat died".

A week later the sailor gets a letter from his friend, "Your mom is on the roof".
